Poor Elaine. Poor Emma.
I am confused. Emma is a ghost according to SBEmma, and a fairy changling according to Daniel. Are these the same, or has Daniel been told a lie? I lean towards the latter, particularly since SBEmma doesn’t seem to be in fairyland. Though that could be an interior landscape I suppose.
A good quote from G’Kar: “No one here is exactly what he appears.”
Or perhaps, being a mishmash of stories as she apparently is, multiple origin stories both are and aren’t true at once? If ever paradox were to happen, having multiple distinct and equally viable realities stuffed into your headmeats would be a damn good reason.
Possibly SBE intended it a Emma-what-went-to-Oz is a ghost of -her-, a pale reflection.
Yeah I’m confused too. Emma is now a fairy child? Seems odd.
OTOH maybe we’ll end up with Emma twins running around. They can solve crimes and stuff.
One is a ghost that absorbs stories. The other is a lucid dreamer that never wakes. Together, they fight crime.
Lol, you totally stole the comment I was going to post next.
I think Daniel was just using the story as an alternative way to explain Emma’s creation. Like a changeling, she was created by magic and took the place of a biological child, in this case Sleeping Beauty Emma.
It’s a tad nicer than saying ‘hey, Emma, so it turns out you’re a tear in the underpants of reality…’
She’s both, which is why Daniel used the word “changeling”. What One “ripped” out of Sleeping Beauty was a ghost (“a tear in the underpants of reality”) but what Daniel got to care for was a magical child, since the Emma he got was already full of stories and solid. Daniel has never seen ghost-Emma. But SB has. So in Daniel’s point of view, she’s a construct, a magical child, but he would not call her a ghost, as he has never seen that form of her.
Now the comic features 3 magically created children. Adora, Emma and Nose.
Oh, I see! That’s really cool.
wait… let me get this straight… One ripped out Original!Emma’s soul and used it to create Changeling!Emma. Am I hearing this right? What exactly is a ghost in the context of this story?
I(f there’s a cricket or a blue fairy involved in this story somewhere…
“Fairport fan?” Like Fairport Convention?
Exactly like. Used the name for my first Amazon review (of an FC album) something like fifteen years ago…
I actually made it to Cropredy in 90 and 92 (with Festival Tours, Richard Thompson’s wife’s company)
Here are some photos from 92
Same Fairportfan as the one over at Wapsi?
Yup. I stick me neb in all sorts o’ places.
Don’t worry, Emma — you’re real in the only way that matters: you are loved by people who believe in you.
Daniel has proven himself a proper father, he found a suitably true way to get around ‘the birds and the bees’ talk after his daughter began questioning the whole stork story.
I kid, he proved it by embracing all three of his daughters, even if he can’t actually help them out of the trouble they are caught within. Also by giving her that little push she needed to spread her wings.
I’m just so grateful we didn’t get a totally outrageous April Fool’s comic
e.g. Elaine crying she accidently wrote herself in a fanfic and is now pregnant with dragons.
We’re already going to have a filler comic later this week because of MoCCA, so we didn’t want to do two in one week. Plus, I am not a huge, huge fan of doing them to begin with.
The major reason I’m glad we didn’t get a April Fool’s comic is that this comic is so full of weird stuff it would be hard to convince us later that it was April.
My friend I got into this comic told me they posted a blank page with ‘April fools’ on it and they still hadn’t updated the page and I nearly cried
This is that my life has come to
Ack! *hugs* I’m so sorry! Don’t worry, we didn’t play a prank at all on today’s page.
And cue the tragic death scene
There’s always a tragic death scene after a heel face turn of epic proportions
Oh Emma just take the sword! I can’t wait to see what happens when she remembers everything…
Contract… Contract… So perhaps…perhaps Emma’s mother was a mythical creature akin to a Selkie, Tennyo, or Swan Maiden? Or…was Emma’s mother a Namesake made up by Daniel in a fit of rebellion against One long before? Cause if an Author writes self-insert narrative…then that could make sense of why Emma’s mother traded her in in order to get away.
Welp, now’s about time for something terrible to happen to the father.
I understand that Emma’s birth was the necessary part of some plot, but it puzzles me why Elaine was born then. I mean, hey Daniel, did you know that women exist who would like to have a child with their significant other because they want to, not because they are fulfilling some contract…? And it gets even better: those women tend to stay in the family to care for said child too, instead of disappearing. If you wanted a second child that much, couldn’t you have looked for a less despicable wife first? O_o
He wanted. One said “no”.
My theory is that she was his namesake and him her writer? But then she had an awesome/ addictively magical namesake experience, but then Daniel got worried & contacted the rippers, with whom she made a deal to let her keep visiting her namesake world/keep her magic in exchange for selling Emma’s name, while also making a contract with Daniel that he write the end of his involvement in her story (hence no more writer magic), and Daniel was pressed into agreeing by the Rippers because of her deal with One, but slipped in the condition that she give him a biological daughter using his power over her as her writer as leverage. It’s not perfect obviously but I think it could fit the conditions.
Aww, I’m glad Daniel turned out to not be such a bad guy.
Just because you Bad Guy, does not mean you bad guy.
Up vote for Wreck-It Ralph reference.
DAMN RIGHT SHE’S REAL! SHE’S OUR EMMA! D:<
AAAHHHYES. I love exposition that answers questions. SO satisfying, particularly when it still keeps you wondering what the next answers will be!!
My eyes keep going to that sword and wondering what will happen when Emma takes it up! But Emma as a changeling child makes a great deal of sense.
If Daniel and the sword get tossed away or something when Emma was ‘inches’ from getting her memories back I’m going to scream. D8 Just…hand it…to her PLEASE before someone snipes you both. 8C Also Emma’s mother was a namesake, but was she a human one?
“I can’t help you any further. I can’t go against One…. Wait a tick, I have a sword!! YEAH!! LET’S GO KICK HIS BUTT!!”
Daniel has a number — and needed a boost to activate writer-powers. Maybe One managed to Rip a Writer’s abilities.
Maybe that’s where Nose comes from, and why Writer powers don’t affect him.
Oh, right, meant to say that if his Writer-powers got Ripped, maybe he’s under One’s control.
Hope she doesn’t develop a Pinnochio complex.
OKay just posting this at the top because a few people messaged me on tumblr rather angry about the changeling term. “Is Emma a changeling or a Ghost?” She’s both, which is why Daniel used the word “changeling”. What One “ripped” out of Sleeping Beauty was a ghost but what Daniel got to care for was a magical child, since the Emma he got was already full of stories and solid. Daniel has never seen ghost-Emma. But SB has. So in Daniel’s point of view, she’s a construct, a magical child, but he would not call her a ghost, as he has never seen that form of her. A changeling is a magical child replacing a real one, and to him, she is exactly that.
Thanks for this answer, but I am sorry that people got angry at you. Dealing with ambiguity is part of reading fairy-tale based stories.
Awe I forgot about Adora. I miss her :/
D: I agree with Nettle that people shouldn’t have sent you angry messages
Thanks for the clarification though!
SOOO, basically Emma is the changeling while the other Creepy Emma is the ghost?
Gah, no one expected Elaine to be a writer! One thinks he successfully created a skeleton key by himself, but Elaine was the one to turn her into a real person.
“I can’t go against One.”
What?!? No offer-you-can’t refuse, capped by “Take up your sword. Together we will depose One and Rule the Galaxy!”
Geez, Daniel, what kind of a story guy are you, anyway?
we can only dream i guess lol
…was his WIFE a fairy or changeling???
But wait, if SB!Emma IS Sleeping Beauty logic would deem that her name really is Aurora. Does changelings and real children have to have the same name, and have we really heard anyone call SB!Emma by name? Someone might’ve said this waaay back and all, but it would just make so much more sense if she really did
I’ll have to check my comments before I say I never doubted you, but whatever I said, you are officially the awesomest dude ever.
Qué follón… But it’s a really well-developed plot “follón”.
OK, I think I’m more or less getting it this far >:D Congrats, Meg and Isa. You’re doing a really great job, especially taking into account the complexity of the story This is one of my favorite comics.
I like how she cares for Elaine immediately.
So I hate to say this, but I’m still not entirely clear on everything… Here’s what I’m getting so far. The original Emma is a Namesake, specifically from the tale of Sleeping Beauty. She was given to Number One, who fashioned a Changeling/ghost/clone thing from her. This Changeling!Emma is the one we’ve been following so far. She wasn’t supposed to be a real person, but her bond with Elaine made her a Real Girl. Also, because she’s based off Real!Emma but isn’t *really* her, she has her Namesake powers but isn’t tied down to her particular story, making her the Skeleton Key to all the worlds.
Oh, and the mean-looking ghost from the earlier Oz arc really WAS the ghost of Dorothy… or at least the version of Dorothy that was somehow within Emma as a result of her dad telling her Dorothy’s story. And she’s escaped Changeling!Emma’s mind. This is probably a Bad Thing.
… Okay. Do I have all that straight?
It would help, I think, if Real!Emma and Changeling!Emma had different names. Emma Classic versus Emma Light, maybe?
Yes, I was rereading (again) and I think there’s the Dorothy!Emma (creepy looking ghost) and then she’s saved at one point by Real!Emma, who still “needs her” to help free HER from her sleep by One.
I want both Emmas to be free and happy.
So i just thought of something, i might be wrong but did’nt Ozma get a new name and dissapear from Oz for a few years? Just what could she have been up to during those years i wonder.
