So that is Lorina, or what’s left of her anyway. There’s more than one Vorpal blade? Current Alice has the original, so apparently there are more, slightly different ones out and about. Wonder who this “Sleeping Beauty” could be? It would seem a bit odd, if someone named their daughter Briar Rose in this day and age. Oh well.
A quick trip to Wikipedia tells me that she could be Talia, from an older version of the tale, pre-Grimms and pre-Perrault.
The confirmation that there are multiple Vorpal blades is nice though. I wonder if Excalibur is one, and will it be making an appearance?
Oh yeah! I almost forgot Talia. I don’t really like that version because of the rape. Though she is kinda badass in Jim Hines’ “Princess Series”. In that series Talia is an martial arts expert, with amazing agility and beauty, due to the “gifts” the 12 fairies blessed her with at birth, which she absolutely hates. She appears to look Middle-Eastern, and is a lesbian with the hots for her friend and fellow agent, sorceress extraordinaire, Snow White.
Wow…my school just did a performance Into the Woods, and our director added a scene with a lesbian joke about Sleeping Beauty and Snow White…and one of our cast members is named Talia…O.o
Both Aurora and Rose are still used, also Eglantine is a type of rose known as sweet briar.
Watch sleeping beauty be Emma’s mother.
cause remember she went missing after the divorce?
It totally fits.
I was just thinking exactly the same thing! Also, if the girls’ mother is a Namesake too, it would probably help explain why they’re so powerful in their respective fields.
There are already so many mysteries and reveals to be made in this comic. I really am completely hooked!
I know! best comic ever.
hmm… I wouldn’t think their mother being missing would make their mother be sleeping beauty, but I did think she resembled Emma when I saw the page, so maybe you’re right.
I’d always thought Briar was a male, or at least a gender-neutral name, because of the Circle of Magic series. Unfortunately baby name websites tell me I’m wrong Curse you, knowledge!
So you’re a Tamora Pierce fan too, eh? Fancy meeting you here.
Makes me wonder how many of these Vorpal Blades there are.
And is Sleeping Beauty awakening a BAD thing? Hmm…
For them, most likely.
Maybe she’s going to be really pissed off at them when she wakes up.
Oh dang… critical connections have been made….
I wonder: literally Sleeping Beauty, or was that just a generic term? If the latter, then it could be anyone. Her deep sleep seems similar to Ozma’s though, so I wonder if the two are somehow connected.
That’s interesting, particularly with the flowers near her head. Blue roses are legendarily non-existant too.
Blue roses? Aha! I sense magic afoot!
But no really, these last few pages have really made my mind explode with awe and wonder. I can’t wait to see what importance there is for Sleeping Beauty to awake from her Spell.
I remember blue roses vaguely from the movie and book Thief of Baghdad. Blue roses to forget, if I recall correctly…
In fact, come to think of it, it was an Arabian princess under a magical sleep spell. The whole thing was told in a similar fashion to Arabian nights. I wonder if this sleeping beauty is tied to her… And maybe Nose is too?
He was using an Arabic endearment to Emma.
I know. I was thinking of that, too. Just a thought…
soooo, is he Sinbad? Al el Din (aladdin)? a knight I have forgotten?
It’s true that Blue Roses do not exist in nature, in the 70′s they used to dye white roses blue to make them. Recently genetic manipulation has created a strain of truly blue roses though. However I suspect these are not them but are from some story universe.
wait…you mean…Painted roses? As in, painting the roses red (or blue)?
ding ding ding ding! connection alert!
Wikipedia has a picture of that blue rose, and it isn’t really blue, more lavender. More work is still needed to get a true blue like a delphinium or forget-me-not.
I think it might be their mother. One of the few times we see her the setting is in a hospital, and Nose is there as well.
Is that a medical monitor next to the bed of our sleeping beauty? If so, it may be a Namesake in a coma (perhaps caused #1) residing at a hospital in the ‘real’ world.
*sigh* I know you guys love torturing us with one piece of the puzzle at a time, but if you could just do the whole thing, I’d read it in a matter of days and love it forever, I promise.
Also, does that mean Sleeping Beauty is good or evil???
Ah, but a true gourmet would slowly and carefully savour the story. The Ladies are attempting to teach you one of the finer things in life.
Namely, the torture of anticipation.
*sigh* I shall endure, if only to better myself.
Is One the Prince from Sleeping Beauty?
It’s a shot in the dark
Red Riding Hood, you are the only other person I know of who has even heard of Jim Hines’ fairy tale series! I discovered it on accident a couple of years ago, and now own all four books, have you read the last one, Snow Queen’s Shadow?
*clears throat* I wonder who put Sleeping Beauty into the coma and why…
I have read all of them, expect for the first one. It’s on my my list of tings to do. I like how it shows how women can be beautiful and totally Bad-Ass!
Heck yes! And non traditional. I love Talia. In the first book, you’ll find out the real reason the prince brought the glass slipper with him when he searched for Danielle.
Wonder how Ina became like a living shadow! this is getting even more intriguish!!
She really is the original Alice’s sister…? O_o That theory floating around about the identity of “One” is suddenly looking a lot more credible…
What I really want to know is what happened after Edith’s death to further cause Ina’s 180…..?
I love Ina’s expression in panel 6. She’s been doing all of the talking in the hope that One will say something, but he is too tied up in his thoughts. In the last frame she starts to unwind like hair unbraiding. She reminds me of certain views of the ghost.
Alice’s…sister?!? Maybe we’ll meet Sleeping Beauty soon
I’m hoping it’s Emma’s and Elaines mom, then they’ll have to save her…. maybe with the help of somebody from oz… or Fred?
Now, this reminds me of the second ‘The Prisoner’ TV series. The one, where a dreaming person was sustaining a whole world for others to “live” in (basicly as prisoners) and which was getting damaged if that person would wake up for even a few minutes.
And THAT sounds like the plot of Final Fantasy X! It’s also a pretty awful curse, to be in a dream world where you are responsible for the creation of lives, one of which might end your dreaming (for better or for worse).
I can so easily imagine the girls reading all of these comments and laughing to themselves over how we are all freaking out on the little hints they slip to us.
Actually, we’re reading and pretty damn impressed with the discussions. I get email notifications on all the comments, and I think Isa might as well. I love seeing how people’s minds work regarding the different plot elements.
Now I expect Sleeping Beauty to wake up with sleek, shiny hair, feeling fresh as though she hadn’t slept and in a super rage, where she kills everyone she lays on eyes with a gesture.
Now we know (at least I do, for sure) that Alice of Calliope is a modern day person, not THE Alice who has updated her attitude and clothing with the ‘years’ she’s lived. But that she does have THE Vorpal Sword (though we have yet to see why she “opened” the blade back in Chapter 1).
“This slight disturbance should not wake her as long as you fix it. Fast.” . . . . “Well, then. Have a pleasant evening.”
That’s a very clear way of the Boss saying ‘Go Away’ to one if his agents. And she’s a tiny ticked . . .
Hmm, coma… interesting, especially after the flashback when Emma and Nose were in the hospital a while ago? By the way, we never found out why she was there, did we?
I like the subtle elegance of Ina’s clothing style.
Thanks! I actually put a lot of work in the clothing.
Well, it shows. I love the blouse.
I’ve got this nasty idea stuck in my head right now, that One is Emma’s father.
Am I warped to think that would be kind of cool…?
That depends if he’s responsible for Emma’s ill-being. xP
Perhaps Sleeping Beauty’s role is similar to that of One’s wife in the mini-series “The Prisoner”, her endless sleep being necessary to sustain some kind of alternate dream reality. Maybe even the “Sub-Conscious-Space” Nose has brought Emma to?
Makes sense, considering Emma was sleeping when Nose invaded her mind.
This is exactly what I was referring to, though it was Two whose wife it was there.. I don’t remember who was One in that one. But way before, in The Prisoner from ’60s, it was an enigmatic being. It’s not precisely clarified to the end what it was, including a hint of it being a part of 6 (main character).
I love the idea of “Sleeping Beauty” being Emma and Elaine’s mother. Sara Crewe, perhaps?
That would be brilliant. Though that would mean the father took the wife’s surname, right?
As in The Little Princess?
Just to clarify — in panel 5, that’s still Ina speaking, right? One doesn’t speak at all on this page?
Yup, Ina talks the whole page.
