I would venture the guess that since it’s no longer inhabited by any sort of “soul” that made the clothes and fabric scraps “Scarecrow,” it’s able to be there, like any other “thing.” That and, Emma’s mentally and emotionally attached to him at this point, and probably couldn’t envision herself in that realm without him in her arms.
I would hazard a guess that Scarecrow would be able to tag along with Emma even if he HAD still been “Conscious” since, as he himself often points out, he’s not alive.
It all depends on what rules the monster is obliged to follow.
If it can’t lie to you? Ask it ALL the questions. Request additional conditions on the bargain.
If it can lie to you, or make a deal and then break it? Don’t bargain. RUN.
The question, of course, is which ruleset you’re dealing with. The Belle Dame is not a monster whose nature I know. She’s seemed honest so far, but maybe she’s just extra tricksome.
Very good point. And if this will allow her access to said powers, will she be in any condition (mentally/physically/spiritually/etc) to actually use those powers?
She’ll be no help to anyone if upon receiving the power she loses her mind/humanity/soul..
Yeah, I’m with Kayna here; “their lives” does not include “my own life” in Emma’s little speech there. She may very well save everyone else, but as a result “Emma” will be gone from her own body. Maybe she’ll be glowy-eyed and sword-wielding, but she will not be “Emma.”
I really want to know what those other “faces” are about. If I recall, they even said some words in an earlier chapter. Is this thing a compilation of Dorthy souls, like Emma guessed? Or is it nothing of the sort? I still say the most obvious possibility is that, whatever it is, it “ate” or absorbed the souls of others.
Hopefully, Emma is smart enough to tell it that she’s seriously considering her offer, but she needs to know a bit more about the thing’s past. And maybe she’ll speak to a different face?
If this “thing” really does have anything to do with Ozma or any of the Dorothies personally, I can’t see them as referring to Scarecrow is “poor thing.” It just seems so removed and uncaring, so unless this is a CORRUPTION of good souls (or what-have-you), I’m betting it’s something malicious on its own, and trapped for a very good reason.
Speaking to a different face would have been a good, but slightly time-wasting idea. There’s a reason tricksters mostly talk to you in urgent situations. Doesn’t give you time to ponder.
No time to consult! No time to say, “Hey, guys, I’ve got a ghost type thing pulling me into a mental world and offering to give me powers to save everyone if I let it loose. Good idea, bad idea, you’ve dealt with it before and it’s a lying awful creature?”
I think those faces are Dorthys but not limited to them. This spirit was talking about eating Emma and namesakes in general when we first met her. Furthermore I think that Karen was possibly dealing with the spirit and she is among those faces. Maybe even Vanessa new about the spirit and that was her purpose for killing Karen. Maybe Karen was about to make a deal with the spirit to free it and Vanessa killed her to keep that from happening.
We’ve gotten a lot of requests to do Dragon*Con. I’d love to do it, especially since it’s close to my family in Alabama. I understand though that getting into their Artist Alley is a juried process? We couldn’t before the book came out, so I’d like to try for next year.
gaaaaaah!!! this is the best comic i’ve ever read! the storyline is beyond awesome. I’m sooo hooked! omg whyyy oh whyy must i wait until tuesday to read on!!?!?!?!??!
I hope that last line was Emma restating for clarification and not the binding agreement. o-o’ I know she’s emotional after Scarecrow’s death, but hopefully it doesn’t plow into making bad bargains!
So the sword is the ghost’s power, actually? She was shackled by her own might turned against her?
Would that mean if Emma uses it, she’s resigning herself to a similar position Karen was in, as mentioned on a previous page…?

I’d have asked what it would do once freed.
At least there’d be a little time to prepare for anything bad. Like, when she comes back she could say, “I can save your lives, but you need to think of something quick, ’cause something’s planning on destroying the world in about ten minutes.”
Well, ten to one odds the consequences of freeing “it” might very well be one of the ongoing conflicts of the story… Though I am wondering if maybe this thing is the Cheshire cat, or is at least known as such in wonderland, and was imprisoned by another namesake for causing so much trouble.
First!
Snap! For now, that offer seems very tempting….however, on the long run, I’m pretty sure there will be consecuenses….and not of the good type either.
Also, how did the body of the scarecrow “travel” along with Emma to “the ghost’s realm”?
I would venture the guess that since it’s no longer inhabited by any sort of “soul” that made the clothes and fabric scraps “Scarecrow,” it’s able to be there, like any other “thing.” That and, Emma’s mentally and emotionally attached to him at this point, and probably couldn’t envision herself in that realm without him in her arms.
That’s pretty much the size of it.
I would hazard a guess that Scarecrow would be able to tag along with Emma even if he HAD still been “Conscious” since, as he himself often points out, he’s not alive.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DealWithTheDevil is usually not the preferred solution of course…
But, alas, the most used solution… or at least temperary solution.
“It may be a crooked game, but it’s the ONLY game in town.”
That thing keeps getting creepierrrrrr I don’t like the way it looks at my grandchildren
Ooohhh! I *like* those last two panels, as if the monster and Emma are two sides of a coin.
Good Emma, be suspicious! But you haven’t read enough fairy tales to know how to make a deal with the Belle Dame.
It all depends on what rules the monster is obliged to follow.

Oh my gosh. Those last two panels give me chills. EXCELLENT composition.
Aw, thanks!

Ack. That would be me. Approving your comment right now … except there’s nothing in the moderation queue. Curious.
Ah, looks like Isa got it. Isa’s on top of things!
Ohh, this isn’t ominous AT ALL!!!
All of “our” powers? Interesting.
Good point!
Very good point. And if this will allow her access to said powers, will she be in any condition (mentally/physically/spiritually/etc) to actually use those powers?
She’ll be no help to anyone if upon receiving the power she loses her mind/humanity/soul..
“Our” powers indeed. Also, Emma is forgetting to figure her own well being into these negotiations.
Uh oh, Emma’s got her srs bzns face on!

Dang tricksters.

Ooooh a deal with the devil, I wonder how this will go.
Also I’m at Winkie Con right now, you two should totally come next year it’d be a great place to promote your comic.
Oh yeah, the Winkie Con sounds pretty awesome! Someone already suggested we visit.
Perhaps in the future?
Yes you should it sounds fun! I recently got a haircut so most of my curly hair is gone, which made me look like a bit like Fred. :3
Also come to Dragon*Con. I know Atlanta, GA is far away but, you two should totally come.

Annnnnd ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO.
Emma? I hope you read TVTropes at least once. This is time to Take A Third Option.
Does TV tropes count as another dimension? Is there a Namesake for TV tropes?
As a matter of fact, there is… sorta:

Meawhile, the others are all 0_o, “Dorothy, who are you talking to?”
i knew it would smile like that. i saw it in my dreams.
This reminds me of Skynet fighting the virus, or O.J. Simpson hunting the real killer.
But it could also end like Bavmorda or Voldemort casting their final spells.
Oh did you make a “Willow” reference?
I love that movie!
curious…very curious…very very curious

O.o
O.O!!!!!
I’d have asked what it would do once freed.

That last panel… that is the face of a hero (or heroine.)
The answer is Dragon Slave. Not Deal with the Devil.
While Emma might not be considering that, I’m guessing someone else in the group might be.
Well, ten to one odds the consequences of freeing “it” might very well be one of the ongoing conflicts of the story… Though I am wondering if maybe this thing is the Cheshire cat, or is at least known as such in wonderland, and was imprisoned by another namesake for causing so much trouble.
Epic!! So epic!! *o*
The Ghost’s grin . . . Cheshire Cat?
