Blood on her hands
on June 19, 2012 at 12:00 amFor those of you who are confused as to what happened, this Intermission takes place in August 1876, a couple weeks after the events of the first Intermission.
Also, since several folks were wondering, this page is a dream. You’ll get it once you see Thursday’s update. And, no, I am not posting it early.

Aaaaaand we’re ramping up the creepy again it seems. But then again, I always was a little weirded out by the Queen of Hearts.
*hides under bed*
you gals just loooooooooooove freaking us out with nightmare fuel.
i’m kind of glad you two have no intentions of making horror movies.
True fact: I screamed at the Silence in “Day of the Moon,” (Doctor Who episode) yet this didn’t make me flinch.
im a little confused about who is who in the panels.
the pinstripe dress and hair throws me off.
Am I the only one not afraid of the Silence??
Well, the Silence is pretty creepy. However never to fear so long as you have River with a gun. She can easily kill three. Well seven for the Doctor.
Everything is better with River. <3
*is a River fangirl and not ashamed of it. Have you seen my Tumblr?

The girl in all the panels is Alice Liddell, first as a child, then as an adult. The beheaded girl is her sister, Edith. In the previous Intermission, Alice’s powers got out of control and led to her sister’s death. The woman in red is the Queen of Hearts. I hope that helps!
Just wondering, how many “Alice” nameskes have there been already? I know the real Alice died on Nov. 16, 1934. So how much time would passed for another one to take her place? Also is the Queen still alive in the present time? Sorry about all the questions, I’m naturally curious( and curiouser).
Oh, I love the questions! I love talking about history and some of the detail work in the series.
I have to go back and look at some of our early, early notes, but I believe current Alice is the third Alice Namesake. It’s actually what I’m working on right now: a master timeline with all of the events, etc. that helps keep us straight. Right now, everything is in bits and pieces in Google chat logs, Scrivener files and notebooks.
Current Alice was born around 1980-1981, so the second Alice Namesake lived from 1934 to then. Not too terribly old, sadly.
As for the Queen of Hearts, that’s a good question. It’s not one I’ve thought about, though Isa might have. Time can flow different between the Namesake world and our own. For example, it was 103 years between the original Dorothy’s visit and Emma’s current trip, but it’s been longer in Oz. Likewise, Emma’s been in Oz for three days now, but about 16 hours has passed for Elaine, Ben and Fred. You’ve already seen the tragic side to some of that passage of time. You’ll see even more of it later on with some of the other Namesakes.
Speaking of which, there is something still not clear to me about the Namesake mechanics – when you say the second Alice Namesake lived from 1934 to 1980, does that mean that she was born on the exact date the original Alice Liddell died and that the third in the line was born at the exact moment of her death?
Or could it be there’s some leeway between the actual birth and death dates and only the namesake “powers” are transmitted after the death of the earlier incarnation. Let’s say, for example, that the second Alice was actually born in 1927 and, on an otherwise unremarkable day in 1934, which just happens to coincide with the death of the original Alice, BAM! she finds herself quite unexpectedly transported in a land of talking white rabbits and murderous red queens…
Namesakes are born pretty randomly. Since it’s not reincarnation, there can be several years between Alices.
Yup, what Isa said. What I should say is the period of the Namesake.
One of my great aunts is named Dorothy and ironically she grew up on a farm in Kansas, I think she had a dog too. But she was born at least twenty years after the first Oz book was published, we’ve made it a cute joke that she’s that one. :3
Children in gas masks and stone angels still freak the shit outta me. Still finishing up the David Tennant specials before I finally get to the Matt Smith episodes and find out what the shit the Silence is!
Also I’m dragging my feet with the specials because I adore David Tennant and his magnificent Doctor-ly ways!
GAHH NO. I thought we were done with beheading in the last intermission! NO.
besides that: I’m absolutely LOVING all the color on this page! It’s just so pretty! Also, I don’t know if this was intentional or not, but in the middle panel Alice’s hair is up in a bun, but in all the other panels her hair is down. That kind of confused me a little.
Also, the dress in the first panels, and the dress in the last few panels are different. Is it a sort-of flashback from the past to the present? It’s a little confusing…
The dress Alice is wearing in the beginning panels is the one from the Alice books. I wonder if they’ll ever mention Alice in the Country of Hearts, since Alice Liddell and her two sisters are in it?
It’ll make more sense when you see Thursday’s page, but this is a dream sequence. I’ll add an explanation to the main post.
I’ve been reading this comic almost since the beginning, and the first time posting, also I have to say I am loving it! Keep up the good work! Have you ever thought of making this into a movie or tv series because that would be so frickin epic!!!
I think it’s a dream sequence, so we go from child-Alice to adult-Alice as the details of the dream change.
Wow. I just started at the beginning a few hours ago. And now I’m here.
I love love LOVE this comic. This is amazing! Your beautiful artwork, page turning (er, clicking) twists, and tinge of creepy makes this a real winner with me. Great job! I definitely want the print books now.
I like the way it goes from sweet and innocent, to frightening and corrupted. It reminds me of Alice: Madness Returns, which is fitting as it stars a alternate version of Alice Liddell. Also will we find out what happened with neverland, if Tink is still alive? What if tink was really a boy :3!? me and my severely twisted mind.
Yeah, talking severed heads. Either a dream, or Highlander 3.
Woah, that was creepy. The Queen seems very strange, and what’s with the “summer’s day” line?
I think it’s from this poem here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Queen_of_Hearts_%28poem%29
That is indeed correct. The poem was quoted in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
By the way, thank you for labeling her the Queen of Hearts, the Red Queen gets too much of her flak. Interesting note, only the Disney cartoon version of the Queen bothered me, and that was as a kid. I was fine with all the other ones. Proof Disney is evil.
Not sure if this proves how tired I am or if I’m just that used to dream logic, but I took this page in stride and immediately knew it was a dream and who the characters were. . . Well, it could also have something to do with my lack of observational skills sometimes, because I didn’t notice that she had different clothes on. XD
Figured it had to be a dream since Alice’s hair and clothing was changing with the mood of the panels. Oooh. Interesting. Getting to see more of the original Alice’s story.
CREEPY! But great page as always, Isameg
I’m sorta surprised so many people had trouble figuring out who’s who on this page. I especially like how you ladies have depicted the queen here, she looks very disturbing like an evil version of the playing card she was inspired by. And again, the color here helps tell the tale. (Alice and Edith seem rather “normal” compared to everything else in the scene. Or perhaps “proper” would be a better word for it. Let’s face it, there’s nothing normal about a talking severed head… Unless it happens to belong to the Cheshire Cat.
)
Edith’s head reminds me of Chuckie from Child’s Play. Now all I can hear is his voice for her head. Wonderful page as always.
FFFFFF-!!!! QAQ
i beleve i have just soiled myself QAQ….
