That is beautiful. I love the expression in Emma’s face! And the arrow makes me think if the scar Warrick healed on her arm in Oz…
Here’s the page where Warrick healed Emma’s arm and, inadvertently, the scar on her shoulder: http://namesakecomic.com/comic/warricks-contribution/
Come to think of it, the appearance of the scars on her feet — http://namesakecomic.com/comic/morning/ — was a few pages before that. I wonder if Warrick healed those, too.
I also wonder whether Sleeping Beauty Emma and Skeleton Key Emma have—or had—the same scars.
Wow, it’s been so long I hadn’t realized how much the art in Namesake has changed (and, in my opinion, improved) from before.
Now is a really good time to do a full re-read of the archive. “Namesake” is a particularly good story for it in general—there’s always something that you’ll see in a new light the second (or third, or fourth) time through.
Beautiful and disturbing.
I wonder why the Skeleton Key seems to be the keyhole, with another key being insterted.
And what is that arrow? There seems to be cracks radiating from the exit wound, which looks bad to me. Could it be like the poppies, starting at one point then spreading unstoppably?
Holy cow! I’ve never had music playing while reading this comic (or any actually), but tonight I have The Piano Guys playing. Their version of Arwen’s Vigil is a bit haunting and fits really well with this cover. I’d post a link, but I believe that ends in a huge thumbnail under my comment, soooo just trust me, fellow readers: YouTube the video and just look at this page again.
This is gorgeous as ever and I’m so excited to see how the chapter unfolds!
I was listening to epic music and
It just seems to fit with the image, right?
I love The Piano Guys, and I had never heard this song before you mentioned it.
You are very welcome.
This is a gorgeous picture! <3
holy heck this is just beautiful.
Most amazing one yet!
New lock screen oh my gosh I love this!
That was one of the most powerfull covers from this comic yet *o*
We’ve seen arrows like that before: http://namesakecomic.com/comic/fighting-for-the-crown/
So, in one panel, we have an arrow from Wonderland (or possibly a world-spanning element *represented* by arrows, not yet explained in-story), magic/powered-up eyes, Emma’s Namesake crown, and her (skeleton) keyhole. And what’s with those cracks radiating out from the arrow-wound?
Nice find. I wonder if we will see more of Alice Liddell after this as we know her to be a ghost-vanquisher and owns her own magic sword?
But is that possible, since there’s another Namesake Alice in existence currently?
I was wondering this just this morning: Could a new Namesake take over while their predecessor is still alive? Having “finished your story” may be the only condition; if you’ve finished (and probably lost portal powers) and come back to your world intact, you may still be alive when your successor does their trip to the same story-world.
I thought of this in the context of *Ina* apparently still being alive, or at least around…
Right, I meant that we’ll get to see more of Liddell’s backstory and possibly the origins of the skeleton key plans, swords, and current Calliope/Ripper split. I imagine that Alice Liddell is long gone by “now”, as she seemed to live in an older time period. However, I actually get the sense from how IsaMeg have described Name-saking rules before that it is possible to have many of the same Namesake in existence. In fact, we get the impression that the Rippers and Calliope are two regional groups (London?), leaving the possibility of similar groups in every country/region of the world. The link and roles between Writers and Namesakes is a very personal and hazardous one, and Calliope decided to form an MI-6 type organization that spans many years, to find them (using pooled magic objects) and help them get through their stories.
Couple more things:
The passage quoted in that page is talks about “fighting for the crown”. It ends with the King (presumably of Wonderland, or at least part of it) saying “And the best joke is, that’s my crown all the while.”
For one thing, there’s the whole crown = Namesake thing.
More specific to the present, there’s One wanting Emma (presumably Skeleton Key Emma) to “get what I want from the King of Crowns”: http://namesakecomic.com/comic/why-sometimes-ive-believed-as-many-as-six-impossible-things-before-breakfast/
After reading the page title, I feel like I achieved something.
Emma’s posture seems to communicate a rising anger. Her eye looking at something behind her with her head slightly turned or in the middle of turning like she’s just seen something. Her expression looks like she doesn’t like it. The lighting also suggests something is behind her. Her dress is evocative of bed sheets, like she’s been sleeping (which makes sense because she’s sleeping beauty and that she’s been asleep to the evils of One’s rippers.). Her hand is clenching the bed sheets, as in anger. Possibly gaining a literal grip on reality as opposed to sleep, unconsciousness.
As Peter Hosey said we’ve seen the arrows before and I don’t have a theory yet but Emma being shot fits with her being recently hurt by One (memory wipe, or longer ago story absorption/synthesis.) but it was shot from in front of her, like it was coming from a different source. Real Emma perhaps? Like the arrow is a symbol for a painful warning.
The crown, Emma’s eye, the energy snow, the key, and the keyhole are all the same, or nearly the same color, suggesting that they are the same/similar energy. It’s been previously stated that if Emma uses “her key/ the key that is she” to turn the “lock” the world will end; so I’m guessing that Emma’s just noticed and is mad at the key.
The cracks around the key hole are similar to the ones caused by the arrow suggesting that the the keyhole is hurt/is a wound similar to the wound created by the arrow. It’s not clear whether the key is causing the wound. If the keyhole itself is a wound it would be interesting if it was caused by the multitude of stories that were forced into her by One, or something else.
The snow has just started to fall. I believe this has been caused by Emma’s recent awareness of danger and her engaging of her namesake powers in response. Her crown and eye also suggest an engagement of namesake powers.
The only thing I don’t know about is the stained glass light/symbol behind her.
Again gorgeous, well planned and executed.
Thanks for reading my pseudo Novella comment.
You beat me to it ; )
stained glass may be the shattering of either the world or of Rippers control over Emma, But that looks like Ghost! Emma to me.
Beautiful cover! Peter Hosey pointed out that we’ve seen these arrows before, and others have noticed the cracks around her wounds. I’d like to make a guess that the symbolism here is that while Our Emma has now learned that she is a shell containing both stories and the SB Emma, her face and clenched says she is newly determined to take the fight to the next level, regardless of her wounds. The arrow(s) may represent the damage that can be done in the Namesake world, so Emma’s arrow reveals that she is a shell (and thus cracking at the wound and keyhole). She is still crowned, however, and her crown and the key are made of the same ‘stuff’, so she has the power to solve her own mystery.
I was so amazed when I saw this cover. It was beyond words. Others here have put it better than I could! Outstanding!
wow. just… wow.
“You missed. I hope you’re prepared for the consequences of not taking me out in one shot”
What does not kill me better run pretty darn fast.
this is the best picture to date!
I just started reading this yesterday but…. When does the next parts come out???
It updates every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The authors keep a buffer, so the updates are promptly at midnight Eastern time.
Another beautiful cover!
Emma’s finally awake…and looks like she’s ready to take care of business.
Her expression is deadly serious. Her posture is feminine but strong…her left hand clutching the fabric almost angrily. The red arrow…I see the possibility of injury or sacrifice…but the crown is hers.
I’m back! I took a break from commenting and got an official discus account. I did my best not to miss an update, and I like how the story is progressing. I love the picture, it’s darkly beautiful and I think it may hold some foreshadowing. :3 Can’t wait to see what’ll happen next!
I started reading about a week ago and I caught up today without realizing it! So glad I found this comic and I can’t wait to read more.
Oh, Emma, I fear for you…
Please tell me there are going to be prints available of this. SO EPIC
Let me get that added to the store tonight! I need to update with the last few chapters. It’ll be in this listing: http://fairyloguepress.storenvy.com/collections/25838-all-products/products/1629396-print-namesake-chapter-covers-8-x10
With you guys keeping the store so up-to-date, there isn’t going to be anything left for me to buy when I go to TCAF in May!
I’m so hard done by.
Don’t worry! There’s definitely stuff not in the store right now that will be at TCAF!
This is such a kick-ass cover. Her glare is making me wobbly in my socks.
I think the lines around the keyhole and the wound look less like cracks and more like poison…
