So all the Previous Namesakes that have died in OZ have been sealed away and not allowed true peace. These Dorothy’s have probably also, though scary, been the power protecting Our Emma. She’s not a “Dorothy” in the sense that most of the procedures would call for, but she’s adapted to the role rather quickly, but is skeptical of the usual cookie cutter deal. Now we learn this about the previous Namesake Dorothy’s. Obviously passage of time continues, but the ‘Writer” for the Original is long gone.. Isn’t he? In which case, is the ‘He” a new writer somewhere? and this is where I shake my head thinking my meds for the strep throat and muscle inflamation have gone to my head.
If Emma takes the sword, will these “Dorothy’s” be free to pass on so they can rest in peace? And how would Emma with the sword change the “Dorothy” factor in Oz?
I just kept thinking the first panel with all the faces was creepy. Like I couldn’t form a coherent thought at all. Then we got to the later panels and it all made sense. She did say she wasn’t “One” of the Dorothies. She may be all of them. And that would definitely answer a LOT of questions.
I wonder if this is where Ozma gets her power. It’s easy to think of the nice polite ones well, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a dark side themselves. Perhaps she used the Dorothies to sustain the protection spell. Of course, it is equally likely that an unfortunate side effect of the protection spell is that those who die in Oz, are forced to stay in Oz. But since they’re never mentioned, they reside “in between the lines”.
A+ on this one ladies! All along your take on the OZ stories is truly original and a worthy update to the OZ legacy. Phillip Jose Farmer failed to pull that off and, despite it’s popularity, the less said about “wicked” the better. Both of those stories attempted to create a more “adult” OZ by debunking the beauty of the original series. You’ve kept all the splendor, but made a truly engrossing story that massively expands on the original. A truly artistic accomplishment.
Now the question is, who do you see as playing what in the movie? Yes, I know that has already been posted by a fan but who would be your picks?
Movie? I really have no idea. I guess i’d be happy with anyone as long as they are talented and do actually respect the original ethnicity of the characters (for example, casting a white person to play emma would anger me. She and Elaine are Part Hispanic on their mother’s side. And are therefore darker skinned by default). Although, Warrick’s hair and smile was strongly inspired by Ben Barnes. And I guess that sorta fits the character.
Take a look at “Snack Time” from June 11. Emma asks the ghost if she’s one of the Dorothies and the Ghost says “No, I am not one of them. Emma may have asked the wrong question, if she is ALL of the Dorothies. Emma is sure right about her being cryptic! Fascinating work Meg and Isa!
YES, I just thought that too yesterday/this morning!! Dorothy didn’t say to click/tap/knock her heels together three times . . . it was Glinda!
Maybe, somehow . . . the Dorothy who have past and the Glinda who is sleeping victim to the Poppies, got together in the spiritual sense and tried to combine their force . . . but that still doesn’t explain the “wanna eat you” bit.
One piece of evidence that could fit THAT is the theme of Red. Red is the Quadling Country, which Glinda ruled over. But if that’s the case, boy, time hasn’t been kind to Glinda’s looks OR brain.
She could be the Dorothies. Or she could be the Wicked Witches who were previously defeated playing a game with Emma. Or she could be something else.
One of the problems is that we’re ALSO dealing with a MULTIVERSE here. There’s nothing that says that Miss Eyeless has to be FROM Oz — or Wonderland, for that matter. She could be from H.P. Lovecraft’s work, for all we know.
That statement…… It make me want to either call you an evil bastard… or hug you… or both….. Speculations….. my poor hamster is going to have a heart attack trying to figure it out
So… the ghost-lady actually seems okay here. But she also tried to eat Emma earlier. And I’m harbouring a suspicion that she’s somehow connected to the closet thing.
Just to screw with everyone else here, I’m nominating Koh the Face Stealer from another popular canon that has nothing to do with fairy tales as the ghosty here. *giggle* I know it’s not possible, but hey, since we’re theorizing…
Really late on the speculation train but I just noticed: It has eight ‘faces’ lurking in there. There was a comment in Warrick’s flashback that the eighth Dorothy had just died. (The Dorothy shrine had seven skulls in it, so seven plus the original if her body was really missing.)
I don’t think it’s the Dorothys at all. What if it ATE all of them and that’s why they kept dying more and more quickly? (Though if this was the same ghost that came out right after Karen’s death, maybe it’s eating other namesakes than just the Dorothys and just piggybacked to Oz with Emma. So now I wonder if the monster in the Wicked Witch’s closet was something else altogether? Because if it really was sealed in there the whole time how could it have eaten the most recent Dorothy?)
Even after more recent appearances of the ghost I’m still poking back through the archives looking for clues… *laugh* Always more questions than answers…
As ghosty mentioned before, she’s not ONE of the Dorothies. But she may be all of them.
But who imprisoned her? I want to say Renge, but Ghost said “he” and faker or not, the wizard wasn’t evil….Wait, Frank Baum, perhaps??

That’s a LOVELY drawing of Emma’s close-up face in panel 5 (“I’m not sure I even want to [help you].”)
And the first panel is FANTASTIC, too!
And that answers a lot of questions. Some of us had guessed that before, but other turns of events made us wonder again.
Well done!
If Emma takes the sword, will these “Dorothy’s” be free to pass on so they can rest in peace? And how would Emma with the sword change the “Dorothy” factor in Oz?
I’m not sure I believe the ghost at this point. This might only be a ruse to set her/them free by pulling out the sword or something like that.
Soooooo, did all of the Dorothies… merge? Is that what’s happening here?

I agree. This one WORKS, while the others didn’t.
My own Oz novel is currently being pitched to the major publishers. Hopefully it will get its chance.

There are 9 faces in the first panel. Has it been established how many Dorothies there were from Dorothy Gale on?
Oh.. La première et la dernière case sont magnifiques…
The ghost this chapter reminded me a lot of Miyazaki’s spirited away’s black ghost that follows the main character around. It’s pretty freaky stuff!
Way at the start they mentioned that the girl in the wheelchair was being consumed by a ghost, so I’m not sure how this ghost is the same.
AND We find out that Emma’s sister is a writer around the same time.
I know, right? You mean ‘No Face?’
Ohhh, I see. “I’m not one of them.”
This really took a turn for the depressing. Seriously, I teared up a little on the last panel. I feel so sorry for the Dorothy’s.
wait a minute, if writers have the ability to change reality in stories…I’m on to you two…
From Isa’s tumblr: “Everyone note that the ghost still didn’t say it was a Dorothy. Emma did.”
And… cue my brain breaking. I don’t even know anymore.
Now I’m wondering if it’s Glinda :p

Not enough gills or tentacles to be an HPL lady :p
Yes. The plot theory rat is having a conniption because the maze has too many paths.
So… the ghost-lady actually seems okay here. But she also tried to eat Emma earlier. And I’m harbouring a suspicion that she’s somehow connected to the closet thing.
So WTH is going on?
Just to screw with everyone else here, I’m nominating Koh the Face Stealer from another popular canon that has nothing to do with fairy tales as the ghosty here. *giggle* I know it’s not possible, but hey, since we’re theorizing…
Lol, I really love this theory.
