*gives Noise the side-eye* Just what do you mean by “repairs”?
I sure hope Calliope finds her first.
*facepalm* And of course I mean, ‘Nose’. Where’s an edit button when you need one.
The non-existent edit button it hiding and laughing maliciously at you. To be honest I’m laughing too, but in a friendly not-at-your-pain kind of way.
Aww… I so wanted to believe Nose WASN’T responsible for her memory loss… Dang it, Nose. =( On a different note, number one kind of looks like Lewis Carroll… Same hair, same cheekbones… I’m on to you.
Thirded, the plot continues to thicken!
If that’s Carroll, he did something to his nose ;3
The hair and cheekbones DO seem really similar. But I dunno, something about the jaw and nose is giving me pause here.
If you were a werewolf would it give you paws instead?
Well! We finally see “One”, sorta. Of course she’s powerful, that’s what you get for messing with her mind. And one of the big mysteries is, who is “One”? What namesake was he? :3
Or what Author?
(And author can try to control a Namesake…)
WHAT. I started reading this comic yesterday, and looks like I’m finally caught up, which means… I HAVE TO WAIT? D:
This is horribleeee~ Want to know what happens!!
Welcome to the line waiting by the Update mousehole! Pitch a tent, grab a S’mores!
Oh Nose, why?
One looks slim and frail.
That is so Lewis Carrol. No way it could be anyone else. Just look at him! I wonder how that happened? maybe something happened to Alice that made him go rogue or maybe the cat did it? I’m wondering what happened to that cat but I think the rogue theory is more plausible.
I don’t know if you’re right, but if so, I wonder how he got to live so long?
I don’t think it’s Carrol, though. Maybe it’s a descendant of his?
Wow, creepiness. Emma’s somehow a computer system.
“You take the blue pill — the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill — you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”
Emma…is the matrix! *cue dramatic music*
Interesting. I have to wonder if “One” is the head-dude, or if he’s simply the first to sell his name..
Also, considering the fact that Alice was so angry about Writers who dare to try controlling Namesakes, I wonder if “One” or the real person pulling the strings isn’t a Writer.
And I wonder what these Numbered folks think they are up to. Might be they think they are trying to save the world from Alice’s group.
..although if I found out that stories were real I can’t say I wouldn’t be tempted to track down one of those very nifty immortality-granting items/spells/etc.. Wouldn’t be hard to get a group together with the idea of taking advantage of stories for fun and profit, even if it was at the expense of the world.
Glad to see that Nose didn’t triumph over Emma without a scratch on him. Sad to know that she’s already forgetten Oz. Have to wonder though how often she’s been made to forget before, since Nose mentioned he knew her but that she couldn’t remember him…
Wonderful work as always Isa and Meg.
Not so sure her memory was tempered with before, maybe but I think not. Nose’s previous comment was more along the line of, So, she doesn’t remember me,” to me. Given that she’s several years younger than him, that could just be age. They met when they were both quite a bit younger.
As for nose failing to seal her memories and powers, YAY! I have a feeling he’s reluctant anyway, which might have had a little to do with his failure. The “I think” followed closely by “I recommend,” and the consideration he shows in that panel, sort of looks like he changed his mind about what he was going to say.
I’m not saying this is what the Devious Duo haver in mind, but it’s possible Nose’s sympathies lie with Emma but he is bound to the cause. Depending on how, he could later decide to help and betray the cause too. Whichever way it goes, Nose is a very interesting character. I still have no guess who he is namesake of but I’m enjoying the guesses of the others.
My idea is that the namesakes are people who have the same name as the originals in the stories, with the exception of the originals themselves. Each namesake has an Author who helps them and records their adventures. Those authors exert some guidance but have little they can do to control the story. The originals, such as the first Dorothy, might just be more powerful than their Namesakes. This makes me suspect that Emma is one of those originals, technically not a namesake but one of the people that later Namesakes will follow. =) All of that is to say that Nose is unlikely to be namesake of Pinocchio or the White Rabbit, two guesses already made. Who would name their child Pinocchio now? [I could be wrong though. I've met someone whose parents named her "Demon" and a friend of mine talks about two Child Psychologists who name their children Toy Train" and "Aero Plane." Proving that highly educated people can be dumber than Goldfish too.]
…You SO want to read Unwritten (the comic book).
It’s Johan from Monster!!
I love that series. I have to admit, the inspiration is a bit there.
Well, not for one specifically, but I really admire the way Naoki Urasawa spins a story. And the way that he draws every character in a unique way. I love his stuff.
The concept of her memories having been sealed -before- is crazy O_O;
Oh. Oh. This just went from being merely fantastic to being interesting.
Well, I really don’t think it looks like Carrol’s profile (eg, http://namesakecomic.com/comic/prologue-page-3/) but it would be sensible, narratively, for his story to impact Emma’s, especially if he comes to decide that living with the memories, as Alice did, is more of a cure than a blessing. On the other hand, surviving that long would be tricky.
The depth Meg and Isa have gone in working out this story is only now beginning to be revealed. Panel 3 is fascinating and disturbing. At first I thought the similarity in appearance of One and Carroll was accidental. But I doubt that these ladies would permit a coincidence like that. The idea of Emma getting back to fairy tale adventures or Warrick, or even being rescued by Caliope any time soon, is unlikely. We’re in for a dark but fascinating ride.
Anyone else noticing the parallel between Anlise being put under the control of the poppies by Renge and Emma with the mask by Nose? I know that this story is choc-filled with these kinds of parallels and they’re all on purpose.
So… as much of a sweetheart as Nose can appear, if he’s to compare anything to Renge, then any sob-story he can come up with to explain away his intentions will not be enough to convince me any possible malignant actions are worth the hassle in the long run.
Is Nose a writer, or at least used to be?
I have a feeling that’s why he can control other people’s memories.
It’s just a random thought. Ignore me.
Those sisters are undoubtedly powerful O_O Nose doesn’t seem comfortable about bringing Emma for ‘repair’.
So that’s what happened -Nose chewed more than he could swallow! Well done, Emma!
Oooooh, that’s Lewis Carrol and the ghost is Alice or Alice’s sister!!! :O
Excuse me!? Repairs!? People can’t repair something they didn’t know how it worked to begin with… They consider her broken now… Insinuating at one point they had her right where they wanted her.
… What do they have to do with Emma’s origins!?
1) I’m getting the feeling that Emma may be well served to have a look at her own birth certificate. And that perhaps the Rippers had something to do with that hospital flashback as a way of changing it and controlling/hiding her powers until she was ready to be… recruited? Used? Trained?
2) I’m not sure ‘Nose’ is telling his boss the truth (or at least the whole truth) about what happened in there.
3) I’m suddenly having some thoughts about Renge, Emma, and the Rippers… but I’ll just let those swish around for a bit.
Is that “55″ or “SS” (could be short for ‘Sinbad the Sailor?’ – nah, probably a number…)
It is 55, the number. All of the Rippers have numbers. So far you’ve met 46 (Vanessa, aka Bird), 55 (Nose), and 72 (Fish).
You go,Emma! You kick that naughty man outta your mind!
NOOO!!! If they seal of her memories, she wouldn’t remember Oz (I”m saying this because of Warrick (: I have a pure fan-girl heart) and Elaine being a writer wouldn’t make sense!!! NOOOO!!!! NOSE YOU SON OF A BITCH!!! YOU GET OUT OF EMMA’S MIND!!!
You’re so right! You go girl!! :3 Emma x Warrick forever!
REPAIRS?? What the heck are the Rippers trying to do to Emma? And what ‘powers’ are they trying to ‘reseal’ in her as well as her memories of her time in Oz? Why are they even messing with her anyway?
Though I now wonder what was going on a few pages ago with those flashbacks of Emma’s childhood, where she was in a hospital, and knew a young Nose, and was getting ‘injections’ for something that she didn’t like… was she sick or something that brought the Rippers attention even back then, and what about Nose since he was there too? *lol*
and what was Nose ‘installing’ inside of Emma’s mind exactly?
Ohhhh… I was going back over some old pages on the random click link thing… This isn’t the first time it’s been implied that these random characters know her and her powers. The first time Emma sees the creepy ghost outside the library, it tells her to run before the recognize her (or something along those lines). I wonder. Scarecrow said she feels like a Dorothy, but Renge immediately dismissed her as one. Warrick and selva both are comfortable around her as though they are whole again…
I’m starting to get some of the craziest ideas…
As to One… I, too, thought it was Charles/ Lewis, but he appears to be too young. Last time we saw Charles, he was an older man with lines around his mouth and such. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Could this be the new Alice’s Writer?
So many speculations… @_@
You two seriously are geniuses!!!
Hints hints, hints alllllll over the old pages.
I know! I’m picking away at them (which is a trick since I mostly read this on my iPhone!). The clues being RIGHT THERE for us is exactly what thrills me about this story. This will be so much easier when I get the hard copy of 1 and 2. When this summer where you expecting those gems to be available to purchase?
We’re having our books done in a bulk order with several other webcomics, so it looks like June-July for vol. 2 and the vol. 1 restocking. We still have copies of vol. 1.
Ohh! Will they be avail in the store link at the top of the page? Is it possible to order book 1 now or do I have to wait for June/ July for both? (I’m happy and excited either way!)
I’m going to shoot an email over to our ad folks and see which store they’d rather it be listed in. I’ll let you know in a bit!
Yay! Looking forward to it. I only knew of the one store link at the top of the page with what looks like art prints. There’s another store?
There’s one that’s part of our ad collective as well, Hivemill.
Oh. Ok. Where is the link to that? (Sorry for all the stupid questions!!!) *hug*
When you click on “store” at the top of the page, it actually takes you to the hivemill store. Our “old” store isn’t clickable currently because we are in the process of deciding what goes where. Sorry that everything is under construction.
That’s weird. I always thought the FIRST ghost that Emma first met at the library where her adventure first started, was the ghost of Karen (wheelchair girl) trying to protect Emma from the danger SHE put Emma in at the library. *lol*
I thought that, too, until Jack said Karen was possessed. Now I assume it was the ghost possessing her that we saw. Isn’t it the same ghost we saw in the Dorothy house that wanted to eat Emma up (or something of the like?)
Ahhh…. Isa and Meg make me so happy that they created such a convoluted story.
The Intermission at the beginning of Book 2 has certain angles of Dodgson that look identical to One. Gee, isn’t there a theory that Carroll was actually Jack the Ripper (see “suspects” in http://www.casebook.org). Could the Rippers be named after this idea? Maybe I’m overreaching.
When I first saw the title for this page, I assumed it was Emma seeing her place in ruins (after the battle with FRed and Ghost), that will have to wait a bit . . .
Hey Ladies, just wanted to say I got the ebook and it is fabulous. it totally consumed my morning. thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What is around Emma’s face? The Ghost?
Engaging second attempt.
Second chassis initialising.
Didn’t the ghost say earlier (back in the space with the tree and the sword) that “He always makes you forget” (this is an approx., I don’t have the page in front of me). Did Nose make her forget before. And that raises the question, did Emma go to other worlds in the past and was made to forget her time there?
What if Ghost is the amalgamation of all the names the Rippers have lost/sold?
