I have that game on my Steam Account, but I haven’t actually downloaded it… yet. However, its precursor, “American McGee’s Alice” was a most enjoyable twist on the classic.
It’s a game called “American McGee’s Alice in wonderland” (or madness returns for the sequel) a very dark, twisted and morbid rendition of Alice in wonderland
Claimed by a reviewer to be the best rendition of Dodgson’s original in any media thus far… I gotta recommend him this comic. =P
As for myself, I’ve yet to play it
Renge’s name change did affect her personality. Does anyone have an idea what her name means? Jellia sounds jolly (as well as like jelly as someone pointed out on a previous page), and she was cheerful and mischievious then. Renge sounds like revenge, much more sober.
Oooh. Backstory, I love it, but I want moooorrrreee! What has the belt allowed her to do? What does Ozma do with Jellia’s name? Is she trying to give herself some of the joy Jellia had as her original self? What will everyone do now that they know Renge has the belt? Will they try to take it away from her, or will they think that she must be well-meaning because she could have blasted them to kingdom come with it instead of letting them take her prisoner? And most of all, what is going on with the poppies?
The poppies are rather Ozma’s thing. Could they be a sign that Ozma is trying to become Oz? Wedded to the land? Blended into it?
Fun fact from someone who’s followed Isa and Meg’s work off and on for a while:
Renge’s first name, basic appearance, and at least some of her personality traits actually predate Namesake by several years (same for Anlise). Both of them, IIRC, were original characters created by Isa some time ago (I forget what context they were created in though), and appeared in random comic series posted on Isa’s livejournal for several years before Namesake started. These include that “Oziad” parody series that formed the basis for Namesake (mentioned here).
By the way, if anyone’s curious to read Oziad, I’ve dug up a link to it on Isa’s livejournal. Enjoy.
BTW, Isameg, correct me if I got any details wrong.
Like Warrick on this page, I’m confused. Even while I’m reading what’s here, but I’m sure it will all be clearer as the story goes on. And some more looks at the previous chapters.
Yeah, if the belt can only do half of the things I have read about in the comments of the last page, it’s quite puzzling how Sabion, Jinjur and the others would ever have a snowball’s chance in hell against her, not to mention take her down the way they did.
It would depend on what Ozma taught her about the belt. Only Ozma knew “most” of the powers in the books, up until he drank from the fountain of forgetfulness, the first time, Rugeddo was the only being that knew all of the powers.
Two thoughts: was Renge awake and conscious when the Revenging Black Thing broke free? If not, that would take the Magic Belt out of play. Second, it occurs to me that if the R.B.T. turns out to be an aspect or avatar of Ozma herself (or something that Renge used the Belt to create), that might also either take the Belt out of play or limit Renge’s ability to rein it back in.
Or…how sure are we that Renge herself is cured and no longer operating in Evil Overlord mode? I don’t know that I’d count it likely, but I wouldn’t entirely rule out Renge playing possum in order to lull everyone into letting down their guard, then making one last bid to take control of things again..
Invulnerability to any harm, magical transformation of others (into anything really. Only the magical word ‘Pyrzqxgl’, pronounced properly, was better at transformations in the original novels), grant one wish every day and transport anyone anywhere in the blink of an eye are all that were used in the original series. Baum did note it had more abilities but i don’t think he ever explained them and I don’t know if any of the later authors did either.
It just occurred to me that Renge might know the things the belt can do, but stayed because she wanted to talk to them. She could escape any time with the belt if she knows. It would be a point in her favor if she is trying to make up for things.
Then, too, I don’t think Baum was wholly consistent about describing the Belt’s powers. I believe at one point it’s said to be capable of granting wishes with no evident limitation, but much later (possibly in Lost Princess), it’s described as being able to grant one wish per day, with some specific knowledge required to invoke the power.
It’s more implied that if you’re the Nome King you could do VASTLY more with it, but Dorothy had basically grabbed it off of the Nome King to make him vulnerable, and as a punishment for his whole scheme. She didn’t get a user’s manual for it.
Nooooooooooooooooo! I reached the end of the arcives already! Now i have to wait for updates .
I relly lobve the story guys. OZ was one of the first series of books that i ready and helped get my love of read kickstarted. love seeing the people and history form the books used in an OZ story for once;) thanks and keep up the great work!
So, stuff in OZ is almost done. Where is Emma heading to next?;)
What, Renge’s pants aren’t just a fashion statement? I’m shocked! Or maybe it’s because of the amazing magical powers Ozma bestowed on her, in exchange for her name… I think I now know how she controlled those poppies, that is, if she did control them… and now all I have to wonder about is- who is Ozma’s love interest and why did she need Renge’s name to see him/her? Assuming that that was what she used the name for…
I have a feeling that Ozma fell in love with someone from the outside world, or very possibly a something instead of a someone. And her only means of reaching the outside world was to give up her name. And because a name is part of someone’s identity, in a sense she sort of dies… and she’s more or less a ghost of herself. So when a certain someone dies on the outside that she’s inhabited, the ghost of Ozma found Emma. Whether Emma was a namesake to begin with I am uncertain, but clearly she had the potential and Ozma used that potential to return home. Which I think would explain the ghost and her many faces, as well as why Warrick feels more of his heart around Emma.
Hmmm… name change. Names have power… Namesakes can jump worlds with those names. People have sold their names… What does a change in name entail, I wonder. For instance… Analise called Renge by the name “Jellia” earlier in the story. I almost wonder if Ozma kind of lost it with the last Dorothy’s death and tricked Jellia. Traded more than just names. Is it really Ozma that’s trapped, or is it Jellia trapped while Ozma uses her body?
*sweatdrops*
Then again… I’m probably just overthinking this and being creepy…
Oh, Ozma. What have you done?!
Lol. “Alice. What have you done?” I love Alice: Madness Returns! It’s so cool and creepy!
Huh? I’ve no familiarity with what you’re referencing.
Ok nevermind. :3

I’m also hoping for a live action movie.

It’s my birthday! I’m finally 17, and almost redy for the world. Things are starting to get interesting.
Happy birthday! Have a good one!
Thanks!
I’m a very happy boy!

Well, you are discreet about that much, Renge.
Like Warrick on this page, I’m confused. Even while I’m reading what’s here, but I’m sure it will all be clearer as the story goes on. And some more looks at the previous chapters.
Well. She obviously WANTED to be captured and imprisoned, because with that Belt there isn’t much that could HOLD her if she didn’t want to be held.
(I’m still waiting to understand why she couldn’t use the Belt to protect everyone from Rampaging Black Thing)
Yeah, if the belt can only do half of the things I have read about in the comments of the last page, it’s quite puzzling how Sabion, Jinjur and the others would ever have a snowball’s chance in hell against her, not to mention take her down the way they did.

So what can this belt do?

You are assuming the belt can do everything Baum said it could.
…Now, in the current context, who knows if that’s true?
Something to ponder about.
Way to throw a wrench into things! >:P
Then, too, I don’t think Baum was wholly consistent about describing the Belt’s powers. Yeah, that’s a good point – even if Renge knows what it can do, that doesn’t mean she knows how to make it do those things.

Love Warrick’s face in the third panel.
Did anyone else notice that “Renge” is an anagram of “Green”?
WANTED: Dictator for a fantasy kingdom. Must be discreet.
Sounds a lot like Terry Brooks’ Kingdom of Landover novels, starting with “Magic Kingdom for Sale – SOLD!”

))))))
I wonder how she kep it hidden from Anlise.
