As you said, Anlise calls her Jellia in the 4/5/11.strip. Also, the first mention of the “new wizard” refers to her as “one of Ozma’s servants.” Which would describe Jellia Jamb. Meg n Isa have been slipping us clues on this (and no doubt other things, as well) that we (or at least I) didn’t pick up on. Clever women!
Is the name Jellia Jamb supposed to mean something to me? Are the works of L Frank Baum free on Kindle? I always feel like I’m missing the cool reveals, even though this story is good about not requiring folks to have read the books. I think all the inside jokes are whizzing past me.
Look upthread for the basics on her. As the works they’re using are out of copyright, I’m sure you can find them free on the web. I’d start with the Gutenberg Project or Google Books. If they don’t have it, check your local library, mine has ebook downloads available.
Not free on Kindle but you can get the entire series at a reasonable price. That includes the works of Ruth Plumley Thompson, Baum’s grad-daughter and the second official chronicler of OZ.
Actually, you can get them for free several places.
Ruth Plumley Thompson wasn’t Baum’s granddaughter; she was someone already involved with the same publisher.
I didn’t find her extensions of the canon very “Ozzy”, somehow; in fact, the only other one of the “Famous Forty” that I really connected with, other than of course Baum’s, was “Merry-Go-Round in Oz”, the last of the Forty. I haven’t, I admit, read ALL of the others, though, so I could be missing some gems.
Technically, the fact that she is Jelia is not really a reveal… more like an Easter egg. It’s not needed to know the Oz books to follow since the character is about to explain her whole life. But it’s always fun to give them a read.
I knew Renge was Jellia Jamb! Anlise mentioned her true name briefly in the beginning when she was still under the effects of the poppies. Also on Isa’s LJ. Yay! Back on a journey to the past!
My main concern with my kid getting THAT close to the Deadly Desert was them inhaling the fumes; apparently it wasn’t healthy to be within even several feet of the stuff.
But I agree that if *I* lived there I’d enjoy watching things go “POOOF” when they hit the sand.
An interesting change in Oz is seen over the first few books; in the very early ones, the desert surrounding Oz appears to be no more “deadly” than a regular desert — Mombi is chased out INTO the desert and she appears to be no worse for wear — but later it becomes a wasteland of magically destructive sand that will burn whatever steps upon it.
Ooooh, Renge backstory! Fascinating!
Whoa! Jellia Jamb!
Anlise did say so, half anyway, back in the first pages that introduced us to her.

Who is this, exactly? Not sure of this person from source material or how they are supposed to be.
Jellia is a bit of a prankster…she’s the girl who Jack Pumpkinhead and the Scarecrow had as a (mis)translator in Baum’s second book.
I knew I had heard of her before! Wow.
She’s also Ozma’s maid, never called that but she does the work of one, in many of the other books.
She’s from the Oz books, but she is about to explain her life, so there’s no need to know them to follow.
The Scarecrow would have recognized her, I would think. Is that part of why she was trying to keep him away from the Emerald City, I wonder?
I’ll admit, from time to time I’d probably throw flower bits into a desert that made things go pssshhh.
Ha, I TOLD you that she was supposed to go into a Jane Austen story! =)

Ruth Plumly Thompson is NOT Frank Baum’s grand-daughter. She was already an author but picked by the Publishers to resume the Oz series after he died.

Jack Snow’s stuff is pretty good.
Ironically, there is a handy section of the Namesake site that points you to the first six Oz books, all for free. Here you go!
Cool thanks.
They are free. They’re under the free classics =) I got all the one’s Baum originally wrote that way.

I’ve noticed reading this comic that you and Meg are very good about not requiring prior knowledge of the books, but I do love Easter Eggs.
Hey! You can’t just drop cryptic background stories into the comic… can you? OK, you can. And little Renge/ Jellia is really sweet.
Man, “Deadly Desert-Front Property” doesn’t strike me as being prime real estate.
Jellia Jamb
Jelly and Jam
Was that intentional?
I wonder if she has any relatives named “Door”…
Undoubtedly. Baum used a LOT of puns and wordplay in his books.

I keep going back and admiring Anlise’s hair in the first panel, it’s beautiful.
