Oooo, wow. Now I REALLY want to know which story she’s from.
Curiouser and curiouser!
nOOO COME BACK, KID. PUSH EMMA INTO REMEMBERING.
Ha, I just had a Doctor Who moment. Emma = Donna and, as much as I want her to remember -Everything,- I’m a little scared about what will really happen once she does. :[
Panels 4 and 5. Just beautiful! <3
I wonder if there are other UnNamed people lurking around One's mansion…
A thought about this girl's first appearance: Are her legs fading because she's forgetting who she is?
*Thinks about lost cats* . . . Oh lord.
So I’ve been wanting to ask for awhile (though feel free to say it’s classified), do you two have any idea when you will be doing a kickstarter for your third book? I found your wonderful comic not long after the second book was funded, so of course I spend the time between updates wondering when I might be able to participate in the awesome.
Oh! And because I’m not pumping you for too much info yet have you figured out your convention schedule at all? I’d also love to come bother you in person.
We’re going to TCAF, MoCCA, and I just got space for HeroesCon. We have an application into Dragon*Con but have yet to hear back. We also signed up for the SPX lottery and will find out soon if we got in. ^_^
I’m still mailing out books for the second Kickstarter, so I’m imagining this summer/fall for the book 3 Kickstarter. We have the first two in our store. I’m hoping to finish shipping out book 2 in the next month.
Thanks so much! Good luck with shipping books & hearing from cons!
Not a problem! I did check into a couple cons in the Ohio area, but nothing panned out.
On one hand bummer, but on the other (much more exciting) hand my brother lives half an hour from Charlotte and my niece’s birthday is June 18th so … yeah :DDD
Just got mine! Lovely work.
Hurray! I’m glad it got there safely! I’m working on more orders before going off to script later today.
I don’t have the paperback that I Kickstarted, but that didn’t stop me from ordering a “slightly loved” copy of the hardcover edition! (For which I just received a shipping notice *happy dance*)
question: the shipping email included a link for the pdf download of v2. Since I already have a copy of that from Kickstarting, would it be okay if I “gave” the second pdf to someone else? (I’m apparently much more conscientious about file sharing than I was 10 years ago.)
Ack! I didn’t realize you had a Kickstarter order. Let me pop your box open and add the paperback you Kickstarted to it. Can you send me your Kickstarter name, please?
I’ve been going in order by which people pledged, but I stop to do store orders since they’re a bit less involved than the Kickstarter ones.
Well, it’s not like I went out of my way to tell you, I wasn’t worried about it But I guess it would make sense for you guys to only have to pay for shipping once, eh?
I’m pretty sure my Kickstarter name is just Kim Detro. Not too worried about outing myself on the internet, I’ve been Moirla since 1997, heh.
Oh, found you! I thought the name on the order looked familiar! You’re in the “almost but not quite” delivery in person range. I’m going to crack open the box and add your Kickstarter order and send you a new tracking number when I get back from scripting tonight.
Okay, Emma — if THIS doesn’t make you question what you’ve been told and go looking for some answers, I don’t know what will.
Well if that doesn’t make you question what’s going on Emma, I don’t know what will. Also on a side note I’m worried about Emma. What will happen to her if she gives back all the letters she had been forced to absorbed?
Speculation on our nameless Namesake: She could be the Dorothy – IF we assume Scarecrow’s appearance on this page is supposed to be a hint rather than just Emma almost remembering her trip to Oz.
She gave us a hint to who she is – she’s the main character from a story where she has a best friend who’s a boy. I think we can rule out Bridge to Terebithia because it’s told from the boy’s viewpoint. Wouldn’t be Hansel and Gretel because they’re brother and sister. I vaguely recall a tale (I think it was from a book of Irish or Scottish folk tales) about a boy and girl who were best friends, but can’t remember any details about the story.
Well, there’s the Secret Garden, which is probably out of copyright by now, which had a girl and boy who depended upon each other.
When Nose put that mask on Emma, Scarecrow was there at the time.
I think you need a story that is old enough to be out of copyright, with a girl who is protagonist, and has one very good friend. I think that would exclude The Secret Garden since there are Colin and Dickon, Heidi since there are Peter and Clara, and Oz since there are Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion.
Now if Isa and Meg were to mercilessly tease us, she’d be Gerda…
Gerda crossed my mind, but it seemed a bit far fetched considering the name isn’t popular even in the Netherlands (according to the baby name websites I use for writing research).
Madeline is out because it’s still in copyright. The Goose Girl is a possibility, but the princess isn’t specifically named in it.
Netherlands? Don’t you mean Denmark or Scandinavia as a whole? And there are still Gerdas around, although the name was more popular among older generations.
Not being popular doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist at all. It IS possible to have such a namesake, no matter how slim the chances are…
would knowing how to make exits also be a hint to her identity?
and possibly someone with an issue with her leg? I’m not entirely certain what was going on in that panel on the prior page, but someone thought it was disappearing, which kind of made me wonder if it was a phantom leg? Could she be a character who loses her leg?
She also keeps saying “letters” – perhaps her story is one of those written as a collection of letters, the way Bram Stoker wrote Dracula?
This is an interesting idea. I am thinking another. Could be letters as in the alphabet. Those that go on the pages of a book.
After doing some digging through classics of literature, there’s the chance she could be Irene from George MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin.
The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson could be a contender too since the protagonists were very close friends, was told from the girl’s point of view, and we already know that Hans Christian Anderson was the Writer for several Namesakes.
I think this lady is the Japanese writer on the tree of authors that we
saw a while ago. I’m blanking on her name but she wrote to a man and
they fell in love and got married. She’ s “writer” and she’s invisible
b/c her stories were taken away. This is going to happen to Elaine (we
saw a “sneak peek” of it a little while ago). They take the stories and
force them in Emma. Emma is “PANDORA”. She is a box filled with all
I hope the cat is metaphorically lost in thought amidst papers, rather than truly lost in the outside world. I did have a cat that went missing for a couple weeks, but it came back home. I was about twelve and was so happy she came back.
So, I wonder if any of those papers Emma vomited up made their way back to the ones they were stolen from? Clearly, being a Skeleton Key isn’t good for your health, or the health of the theft victims. I think it very encouraging that Emma remembered the lost space between worlds and Scarecrow.
I’m imagining Emma as a fois-gras goose now. No wonder she doesn’t like stories if she’s been stuffed with them. I am intrigued by this new character.
Metaphorically lost. I’m digging up a photo.
Hi, I’m one of the numerous silent lurkers who loves this comic. Curious if Isa or Meg have thought of making a novel based on this story? I predict it would be a best-seller
Hi! Yes, Isa and I have discussed a novelization of the story and sketched out the particulars involved. I would love to do a novel just based on the Alice Liddell backstory, but I want to get further ahead in the comic. So, if we go ahead with a novel, it would be the Oz arc (chapters 1-11).
It would be neat because the comic is largely Isa’s interpretation of the storyline, whereas the novel would be mine.
Several novels then!
Yes please I would love to have them displayed in my bookcase. One can never have too many novels, books and ect.
Awwwww, Scarecrow. The feeeeeeeeels!!
Maybe this will kick start Emma into remembering what happened to her?
So, I guess Emma has so many stories inside her that she’s throwing a few of them up when she’s unwell…? Yikes. O_o
She reminds me of a picture on I think one if the covers (I read this on my phone so its hard for me to quickly find pages I want) but it involved a large bottle with a girl who I think looked much like this one glaring out. Was she a letter in a bottle? :p
I’ll see if I can find the page. I’m probably wrong, but that’s where my mind jumped:)
YOU’RE RIGHT. Very similar!
But I think that the bottle girl is Alice Liddell. The page tag references her. This girl also looks like Susan, the younger Alice’s friend, but Susan wouldn’t have any letters, would she? She was dropped into a story, not written in.
I looked through Grimm’s and Andersen’s & found nothing but Hansel and Gretel. Grrr. In these old fairy tales, female protags don’t have male friends, they have boyfriends and brothers.
The ladies on that cover are Alice Liddell and Thumbelina.
oh my, I forgot that picture! Is Lina wearing pants? She would be an awesome cosplay. (not that I’ve ever followed through on any of the costumes I’ve been inspired by, but there’s a first time for everything. Now I’m going to look for a giant button on the interwebs.)
She is wearing pants! Adorable pants.
Should Thumbelina be character-tagged on that page, then?
Weren’t the boy and girl in the Snow Queen friends? Or am I misremembering?
Keep in mind, though, we’re not just limited to fairy tales…she could be from classic work of fiction, instead.
Yeah! Kai and Gerda.
I have binged on the entire Archive over three days and it is AWESOME. The art and the story is exquisite, the only down side is I now have to wait for the next part
I did the same thing recently. It’s so fun while it keeps going… and then you reach this page. And you can’t go any further. It is very sad.
So THATS how Emma ended up in Oz, she absorbed the story.
(I guess you don’t get many Dorothies these days)
This explains how Emma became a Skeleton Key, One has filled her with all the stories from the former namesakes. Every time he “bought” a name he actually took the story attached to that name. When Emma is vomiting papers (bad image I know) it’s the stories coming out. She is connected to all the stories formerly connected to various “Rippers.”
BTW, several of the comments I read mentioned uncommon names that are no longer chosen. Keep in mind that it’s the name you associate yourself with, not necessarily the name you are given, that matters. If someone Identifies themselves with “The Goose Girl.” for example, they are tied to that story despite that character not having a name. I’m guessing it’s a lot easier to identify with a character if you have the same birth name but it’s the feeling that matters. Meg and Isa explained that some time ago.
Speaking of the regurgitated stories, I wonder what’s happened to them now that they’re no longer held inside Emma. Are they returned to their original Namesakes, or do they enter something like that space of lost things Emma went through coming back from Oz?
I think they ARE still held inside Emma. The papers she regurgitated doesn’t mean she lost those stories – they were not put inside her physically in first place. Or, maybe those were the stories (or part of them) but they put them back (or can do it later).
This also hints to us there may be a Jim somewhere in the Ripper’s possession – either as a Ripper or a prisoner. Emma’s Dad earlier commented that she’d vomited up half of Treasure Island.
This would mean that — since Emma has been to Oz — he must have ripped the name from a Dorothy to put in her, yes? That would imply that there’s either a former Dorothy who’s a Ripper, or one who’s simply a dispossessed Namesake (ghost?) like this girl.
Is she Susan? from Alice’s past?
I’m wondering too, but Suzan’s hair looked different (though we don’t know what happened to her after Alice’s revival??)
We know Suzan lived on at least long enough for Alice to thank her for her support.
This is both beautifully awesome and quite sad.
For those wanting a reference to the alt-text:
The kitty is adorable, and I’m glad the lostness was metaphorical. The white whiskers are so cute.
The picture is excellent too, it’s so hard to take a good picture of a black cat and keep all the face detail.
Awww, thanks! I was having fun with a new camera lens.
Oh, a tuxie! I have two long-haired tuxie kittens, and man, are they hard to photograph! You did great there!
lmao thanks for the supplement <3
OK, I’ll say it: D’awwwwwwwww!!!!!
Ozma trying to remember Warrick..? I doubt it, but worth speculating.
There, CAUGHT UP! I’ve read the pages I’ve been missing out on – in just a few minutes … I love how these last few pages is (unintentionally?) similar to Dorothy’s visitor in Disney’s “Return to Oz”.
Yes Isa and meg, I have NOT been commenting for the last few months – not because of the “Fish comment”, there was no falling out from that – that’s because my computer’s drive started to Stop working. I’ve gotten a New drive and gotten back a few things, but I still need to re-install Final Cut Pro and get back to work on ALL those videos I had been meaning to do and finish and/or yet to work on, plus pay for its data to be recovered (and hopefully transferred to my new one) … and I haven’t done THAT yet because I’ve been told it’s expensive . . . and during the time my computer was being difficult an old friend from my childhood school days SCAMMED ME into handing her lots of my money and of course she’s done a dirty, cowardly thing and cut communication. I am trying, with my parents’ help (thank goodness), to give her a Civil Action and get my money back.
Yeah, I’ve had a piece of my childhood shattered and betrayed.
I will eventually make comments on the previous pages . . .
Glad to be back!
And as much as I’d like to, I can’t work on my videos now because (aside from the need to reinstall Final Cut pro and re-rip Almost EVERY Oz DVD I have!) I am currently working on fixing up my Fan Comic for “Return to Oz”, doing each page a day, hopefully making it as best as I can make it (excluding printing/professional release) for its 30th Anniversary in June 2015.
Sorry you had such a hard time, welcome back!
I wonder, could the friend she is talking about be her writer?
They “took” her letters from her… one is trying to make it sound like he’s saving the namesakes, or they’re willingly giving up their powers, but obviously is stealing them…. Man, some webcomics i can handle the wait for updates but waiting for this one to update is MURDEROUS. Curse you for being so damn good
She is Chell from Portal, and her BFF is the companion cube
Gerda! Find him!
Scarecrow rip the mask off! just rip it right off her face! ( surely that could result in absolutely nothing bad. right? riiiiiight?)
