Lends a whole new meaning to the phrase “killer app”, doesn’t it?
That said, either download speeds in Oz are darned near instantaneous, or whatever produced the spell-reflecting effect was already on the phone when Emma fell through the portal. (Or the effect is purely an artifact of the phone being tech-based as opposed to magic-based, which seems relatively more likely.)
But Magic could be an Electro-Magnetic (EM) effect, and this looks like an EM pulse. With the right frequency, the phone would mistake it for a signal. Also, phones are both receivers and transmitters, so absorbing it and/or sending it back (“could not download message…”) wouldn’t be inconceivable.
well you may be right in your thinking the only other option is the one Spoor came up with and it was the reflective properties of the screen. With out more infromation on what and how magic is created, channeled, and used it would be hard to come to any real hard facts.
I’m thinking more it’s a matter of you can’t GET micrometer-smooth surfaces easily in Oz, and just happening to whip out an electronic gadget with a smooth wide screen reflects magic. It would work with IR radiation, too. The “signal detected” is interesting but I’m unclear how the phone itself could do anything WITH the signal, so I’m going for the smooth glass surface as a reflector, possibly because of the backlight reflection built into it.
What type of phone is it, anyway? At first glance I’d thought she had an iPhone but it looks on closeup more like one of the older PDAs.
My votes: 1. the reflective surface. 2. She’s a Namesake and the Universe has decided that she simply CAN’T die yet. I hope you do explain HOW her phone did that. Another thought is that the trip from here to Oz has changed her phone somehow. Of course if the phone has been changed, that could make for some interesting events later, especially when she manages to get home.
Ooops.
Indeed

Either way, I’m thinking Selva is in trouble….
Yeah, she is.
It would be nice if other universes had magical super-fast wi-fi.
Signal detected? From where? I don’t think there are any cell towers in Oz. I’m thinking someone made a magical long distance call.
…For a multiverse pizza delivery!
See my first thought was that the Doctor was calling. I’m a geek that way.
Hmmm…
Could just be the reflective screen.

Yeah, I’m thinking WAYYYYY to much this morning.
*laughs* I like the way you think though!

Woah o.o

I guess that’s what they mean by “resistive touchscreen”? ;P
Smartphones: protecting hapless heroines from angry witches since 2007.
Dude! I wish my cell phone could do that!

But does her phone now have universal roaming?
Not looking good for you there Miss East!
I guess someone sent her a Reflect Spell app.
Attacked by the Wicked Witch of the East? There’s an app for that.
BEGONE BY THE POWER OF APPLE!
Going back and looking through some of the older ones…
Funny to think that after all that’s happened, Selva and Emma are… friends, I guess?
Whatever else you think magic is also physics. Just the ability to summon and channel such energy is different from using technology.
