Poor little Emma. For those not sure what Emma was screaming in the fifth panel, it’s the French word for “Mommy.” Both Emma and Elaine are bilingual and, having grown up in Quebec, French is actually their primary language. The girls moved to Toronto around the time Emma entered university.

The hut seems to be less scary than outside right now
Shocking, but I find myself to agree.
I see a red door, and I want to paint it noir.
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their ghostly clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, i think Emma’s going to be in for a bit of surprise once she goes back outside…
No kidding.
Does that mean the Emma that already got out here was just a creature of Miss Eyeless? And now that two plans that would have succeeded independently (Miss Eyeless’, and Renge’s) ran into each other, both might fail?
Unfortunately, even if Anlise killed the wrong Dorothy and left, Warrick still looks quite mortally wounded, and without Ozma would almost surely die.
That’s a flashback-Emma, from the night before, not Emma-who-is-in-the-house. It’s what happened at the end of the page, what, two pages before that, when the Scarecrow starts yelling at Warrick.
Young Emma probably wasn’t a big fan of James Bond… although if that man would have taken up working as a doctor as a part-time job, I would be scared too.
“Do you expect me to talk?”
“No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to prescribe me some painkillers, thank you.”
What if he’s a Namesake? Different people, all called James Bond, all serving the same purpose?
They could really USE him right now!
Though my pet theory is that Bond is a Timelord.
A Timelord… wow, that would actually make perfect sense!
Is there a particular reason we can’t see “Maman’s” face?
there’s always a reasons when writers don’t show a mothers face.
Of course there is, I was just trying to be sly about it
It’s in emma’s head too. Why doesn’t she want to see the face.
So her mother was Eyeless Ghost?
No, but this is a memory of another scary time where she got herself up and going despite the fear, and it got her going here.
Like HP, the memory of the lessons from your parents can help you later.
I wonder if she was seeing the doctor for nosebleeds and fainting spells?
Perhaps, perhaps.
Well, at least we know Emma is relatively ok. But to leave us hanging on what the aftermath is outside is really cruel you guys…
Wasn’t there something, though, about people not dying in Oz (until recently… wait… maybe they’re still alive, maybe they’ll be possessed by the poppies too, maybe…)
I think the rules are out the window at this point.
The window is now wide open.
I notice… a hole in the hand of the doctor(? or adult) in the fifth panel? and the flying blobs… ? There’s more to this!
(also yay Quebec bilingual!)
Huzzah!
Does anyone else think those blobs looks like what happens when the “ghost” comes out? This would mean Emma had a free loader staying inside her for quite some time and that brings up a lot more questions.
Which leads to crazy theory time *drum roll* Emma’s Maman is Ozma.
Ozma was sad because she couldn’t heal the other Dorothys because she wasn’t of their world. So with the help of “Karen” Ozma came here to become part of our world fell in love and had Emma and her sister.
In away it explains why Karen looked familiar as a friend of her mother and how the ghost could have been with her so long. Yeah brobaby no where close to right but interesting Idea.
Actually, it reminds me of the bubbles that appeared around the Witch of the West’s head when the poppies were removed.
I was thinking the same thing.
Intriguing!
Oh! Quebec. That’s why I was confused when you said French. xD
Little Emma is adorable, and this page makes me wonder if Emma has already /had/ her first traipse to another world. If fanciful tales about other worlds would be dismissed as crazy coming from other adults, from a child… over imaginative play at best. That event being so long ago could be pushed away for a number of reasons; including possible intervention from a mental health facility. This is of course, a lot of lovely speculation!
Speculation is the best part of this comic!
I COME HERE FOR THE WILD THEORIES.
actually if I recall correctly, the original Dorthy was put in a hospital because of her ‘fanciful” belief in Oz. So this page actually fits with the Oz Lore, if Emma is a minor Namesake, perhaps a brief traveling as a small child, was also seen as a “flight of fancy.” This would make it more understandable, children cry when adults refuse to believe them when they are telling the truth, and if my fantasy lore upholds, while growing up, Emma would be made to believe that her first traveling experiance (If it did indeed happen) was nothing more then a dream or a very elaborate game of imagination. Such experiances are either blocked out for the ‘betterment” of the child, or the child themselves forcefully forget. Then there’s also the very slim possibillity that Emma’s heritage to the namesake duty is simply genetic. Perhaps Emma is a direct desendant of one of the other Dorthy’s ?
The original Dorothy went home and then had other adventures in Oz. The asylum subplot was purely the invention of the film “Return to Oz”.
It’s an interesting theory!
Canonically, Dorothy was never sent to an asylum. That’s been something added by more recent Oz tales. But asylum do make for nice, creepy settings for a story to unfold.
Little Emma is SO sweet! And this is all sorts of crazy! I can’t even come up with ridiculous theories because I honestly don’t know what to think! And if she’s freaking out now, she is gonna flip when she sees what’s been happening outside!
She’s got some ass-kicking to do.
Little Emma is adorable! But also apprently plagued with nosebleeds…I like the theories that this isn’t her first trip to Oz (or elsewhere). And I’m thinking the ghost in the sketch looks far too friendly to be ol’ no-eyes.
Also, she doesn’t happen to have an ancestor by the name of Sara Crewe, does she? Or is that an allusion I’m making on my own? Because if she does, then could that possibly explain at least a teeny bit how she came to be a Namesake? Maybe…
Interesting theory. It never said the Namesake had to have the same FIRST name…
Sara Crewe is one of my favorite characters of all time. The choice of the name is a nod to her. But she is not a Namesake
Poop! Well It was a decent theory while it lasted.
Was Emma having a recurring dream? And why is she so afraid of the door number 7?
Was she afraid of going to to see the doctor or is it the door’s number that scared her?
So many questions, it’s interesting to know more things about the main character’s backstory.
Ugh, I have a love/hate relationship with this creepy house! :-p Brrr!
Same here! THAT HOUSE!
Everyone’s already talked about mysterious blobs, the ghost sketch, and the 007 door, but I’m curious about the barely-seen red necklace Emma’s mother is wearing. I wonder what it is of…a red poppy, perhaps, or something else? It might not be Ozian at all!
You’re observant. I like it!
I was reading this comic last week on my tablet, up until the archive-issues in chapter 8, where I’ll need to go to the image source to read them (something I can’t do with my tab), but I only noticed the “double-oh’seven” and snrk’d. This time I see the upload description and omake(s) as well. [somehow I just totally missed them.]
Isn’t it fairly obvious that ‘maman’ means ‘mom’? Though, admittedly perhaps not all would know that was french… and just how did they manage to become bilingual living in Quebec? (hah, just teasing~)
More importantly however; just who is her mother and what is the significance of her pendant?
[the last person who was seen with their head mysteriously covered was in the flashback where Adora's heart was broken.]
