Today marks not only the end of chapter 6, but also the first anniversary of Namesake. Our official launch was October 5, 2010. It’s been a great year, and we’ve learned a lot and have met some truly awesome people through Namesake. We’re both looking forward to many more!

WOW
I want to be a Namesake writer too!!
the look of OMG on the last two panels is Priceless!!!
Open jaw, drop to floor.
oh oh!
also the “you’re a writer Elaine” Totally sounded like Hagrid when he went “you’re a Wizard, harry”
Good old Hagrid.
Amazing! And the look on the guy’s face is so funny!
Yup
Friggin’ AWESOME
Quite.
WOW! Words really DO have power!!!!
Pen’s mightier then the sword, unless the sword is imaginary. Then it’s like double the power.
Haha! Who needs a gunblade when you could have a penblade? ;D
Percy Jackson!!!!!
(I know this coment is old, but I couldn’t resist.)
Hahahaha! Fantastic! I want to see how Calliope reacts to this little bit of news. I really do.
Alice pretty much reacts angrily to everything.
My immediate reaction to reading this panel was: YES!!!!
This is exciting. I’ve been waiting for something like this to happen for a while now, and it finally did. And their expressions afterwards were priceless. I cannot wait to see how Wendy reacts to this. (I have a feeling we’re going back to Oz now though… stinking cliff hangers)
Two sisters who can mess with stories a whole lot. A lot of people were expecting it I think.
Eeee! Fred!
Yep.
I’m gunna go ahead and say this for Elaine and Ben.
BUH???
Also, YES, I totally know she had some kind of control over events! How I don’t know, but she totally does!
She’s pretty puzzled about it herself.
I laughed out loud at the faces in this.
Also: WHAT THE HECK FRED IS SPEAKING COHERENTLY WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN
GAAAAH I LOVE THIS FREAKING WEBCOMIC!!!!
*laughs*
“Elaine always knew her writing of fanfiction would come in handy one day…not that she would ever tell anyone that.”
That and, this totally reminded me of my favorite other-worlds book series, the Myst novels. Because being a “writer” in that universe is pretty controversial: are you writing the worlds into existence, or did they exist and you just wrote the connection from your world to the others? OOOH!
Myst?! WOOT!
Yay! Best twist ever!
Indeed.
Woah oo does that mean she can write Emma back? No, it would be too easy… I can’t wait for the next years of namesake! Happy birthday to the comics!
Thankies!
YES! FINALLY! Also, Happy BDAY to the comics~
Thanks!
Happy Birthday, Namesake! Congrats (and condolences) on becoming a Real Boy, Fred. I hope he’s a friendly native guide…
It might not go down so well with the rest of the deck.
This leads to the question of just how far her ability reaches; can she effect changes to the ‘real’ world, or is it limited to those from ‘fictional’ worlds (and/or the worlds themselves)? Although this does make Elaine a target, valuable/dangerous to *both* sides. I see an interesting morning when the Namesakes arrive and view the changes to Fred.
And congratulations on reaching the one year mark!
Ah, yes, mysteries for the future pages.
And thank you!
WAHAHAHAH I knew it!! Sorta… xD
Was he trying to say in the previous strip ‘I’m a paper’?
Something like that, yep.
Happy anniversary. =^-^=
And that was a cool end to the chapter. I must say though… does that mean she can bring her sister home?
I think she’d have to know where she is first.
Exactly as I thought.
I wonder if it was intended that ELAINE go instead of her sister.
Happy anniversary!
Nope. Elaine is a writer. Not a Namesake. She’s got her own set of issues.
Which leads to another question: Can one be a Namesake and a writer at the same time? Or does being one preclude the other?
OMG. I just had a horrid idea. Two Fridge Horror ideas, in fact.
1) What if what’s happening to Oz and the other places is because someone, somewhere, is a Writer… of Oz Horrorfic? Possibly with some LesYay in there, given Annlise and Renge…
2) What if the basic principles of Namesake were true… and you guys were Writers? Then YOU would be responsible for what’s happened to Annlise and everyone else in Oz…
They kind of are responsible for what happens to them, so in that sense the basic principles are true.
I meant, of course, in the sense that Annlise and Renge were REAL and not just fiction.
First off, happy Namesake Anniversary! Second I have a question. It’s cool that Elaine can change things that she writes, but what gave Fred hair in the 1st place and the idea she might be a writer? She didn’t write anything that said he would get hair, was it giving him a Name that did it?
The Name made him a person, a human being, so that what used to be an artificial automaton whose head had the helmet as an integral part of itself, he became a person wearing a helmet — which would naturally have hair underneath.
The explanation is pretty much like Ryk said. He was given a name, which made him “real”. Cards don’t have hair, but humans do.
Then Elaine takes her pencil and writes: “Suddenly, amidst a whirl of ghostly smoke, Emma reappears home, shaken but safe, as mysteriously as she’d left. Everybody live happily ever after.”
The end.
(Hmm… That would be too simple, wouldn’t it?
Ya I don’t think Isa and Meg want to end their comic one issue after the 1st anniversary hehe.
I think what prevents that is the there’s more than one Writer. The universe has many gods, so to speak.
Just wanted to pop in to say Happy Anniversary! Here’s to many happy returns of the day!
Thanks!
!
Reminds me a bit of that movie, “Inkheart”, only … you know… writers instead of readers…
Never mind. Happy Anniversary!
“Inkheart” is the first thing I thought of, too.
Inkheart is pretty awesome. I love the books.
OH GOD FRED *HUGS FRED FOREVER*
Fred has some good fans
oh BTW happy Anniversary to namesake!
here’s hoping for plenty more years of it, as I think it’s an epic comic
Thankies! We plan on being around for a while.
I love Fred’s adorable somewhat concerned expression.
This entire page made me love today.
Aweosme!
I love this page to death! Now I’m dying to find out what happens to Elaine, Ben, and Fred the next time we see them.
Also, happy birthday, Namesake!
Yeah, I adore this little earth-bound trio myself.
Ah yes, writers are powerful indeed. XD
I am kind of surprised the comic has been going for a year now. Did not feel that much time to me. Maybe that’s a good sign.
I’m assuming it’s good!
Still geting up to date on the archive. From my time perspective, I’ve spent perhaps 6 hours reading. And it felt like a year of intense adventure with people I LOVE!
Congratulations on the anniversary. And a thousand thanks for sharing this “world” with me.
Miss Bug: All right get started!
Mr. Bellbow: Eeeehh? Oh right. Thank you, thank you, thank you,…..
wow! congrats on the one year, this comic is as always a wonderful read. I enjoy the quirks, and personalities of the characters. I can’t wait to see more! Again Congrats on the One year. *raises coffee mug* And g’luck with the comic for another year.
Namesake year 2. More guaranteed awesome characters.
Wow! I just read the whole thing, half before dinner and then I wolfed it down, raced through the dishes and finshed it up. This is awesome! Also, happy anniversary!
Funny that you would discover the comic on it’s birthday! I’m glad you like it!
like it? oh i love it!! you two are brilliant!
This comic. Is so. Inspiring.
This page in particular. I love it.
Hahah! Thanks! Glad you like it!
Happy one year.
I’m assuming since he’s a human now that he can’t return to the card form he originally appeared in without help? I also wonder if the rippers have writers working for them or if the writers have an entirely different evil organization side. Seems to me like writers would have their own side, not specifically good or evil, but acting in the best interest of the story characters rather then choosing the side of the namesakes or the rippers…
When a plot opens up so many ideas and possibilities in people’s minds, that’s when you know you’ve done good work. This story has certainly captured the imagination of a fair amount of people… Or perhaps the story has captured a fair amount of imaginative people.. Whatever the case, keep it up!
Thank you!
The Ripper’s number one likes to have all the cards on his side (pun intended), so he’s probably got a few writers.
Namesake clearly has a good number of devoted fans. It’s time more people take a couple of seconds and vote for it on Topwebcomics.com! This is one great story. Congratulations for the first year!
Pardon my ignorance, but what does a high rank on that site accomplish, aside of bragging rights? Because honestly, I feel that among 2000+ webcomics, only the first thirty-something will get any publicity, not to mention the site looking jarringly ugly, with annoying ads… so unless voting really means something for Namesake, I’d be inclined to stay far away from it.
It’s still a website with a lot of traffic. Although, as you say, the main 30 probably get more attention, if people are willing to devote a minute to vote, it can’t hurt either. Basically, it may not change the numbers by a lot, but it does bring in a few more people in the story. I think if people are motivated to vote, it’s very nice of them, and we appreciate any gestures aimed at making the comic better-known.
I have to agree with you that the website looks terrible though.
It’s a website with a lot of traffic, yes. That’s why I vote; I figure any chance I can to help my favorites get noticed is a good thing. I often check out comics that advertise there. Voting brings up a random confirmation character as well, and I check out characters that intrigue me. I’ve discovered some cool stuff that way.
Most of the comics on TWC are crap, of course, due to Sturgeon’s Law, but not all. So I’m sure this one would rise to the top thirty or higher if all it’s fans voted. I notice there are TWO intries on the site, though. Did a fan create one before y’all did?
I only found this comic myself about a week ago, and it is taking me forever to catch up, since I like reading all the comments. Some interesting theories. And awesome puns.
Also, I kind of savor each page more if I take time to read the comments and consider, I think.
Aw, thank you!
Congratulations on a wonderful year! I’ve been a silent lurker, but I’m such a huge fan of the style of art found here as well as the story. Being a fan of classic fantasy and fairy tales, this is just the perfect set-up. Also, such fast updates! Keep it up, you’re doing wonderfully, and I’m sure you’re in for a strong second year!
Thank you very much! We are motivated to make this next year even better then the first!
Happy One Year!!
And wow. Yes! cannot wait to see where this leads us. ^_^
… Alot of writers actually say that a character only becomes real to them, solid, when they are given a NAME…
Oh my gosh, I was right.
Congrats, on your anniversary.
I´ve only recently started reading, but I love this comic already..
And Fred is absolutly adorable. I want a card soldier now.
First of all? Lots of love and happy birthday wishes! Second? OMG FRED CAN TALK YAAAYSSS! I just wanna hug him forever! This makes me wonder though… Perhaps Elaine is the reason why her sister landed in Oz? Maybe Elaine was writing a story that involved Emma somehow, and thats how Emma ended up as a Namesake? I dunno if I’m on the right track or not, but I cannot wait to see what happens next! Lots of love and hugs, and I hope this comic continues on strong!
About a week ago, Ryk suggested this comic in rec.arts.sf.written. I have been seeing many victims of the evil Isameg (of All Directions), the poor dears in suspense over What Will Happen Next. I have simply carried on reading. Alas! I have now caught up, and now, I am one of those poor folk. The evil Isameg has trapped another. Fine work, ladies, fine work!
Oopses! 1) For “evil”, read “wicked”. 2) I did not mean to slight the art. The art is excellent, but it is the story that traps. Very appropriate considering that this is the Web.
Shameless Toadying About the Art: 1) I really like the use of spot colour for emphasis. Given the choice between this comic being in full colour and it staying with the spot colour, I would have it stay with spot colour. I would like to see more spot colours used though. 2) Very good facial expressions.
Thanks for all the kind comments (sorry if it takes us a while to reply sometimes… it’s difficult to follow all these comments pouring in!)
The spot color gives nice effects in my view, too; one more voice for that working.
Found Namesake through the fan art on Sister Claire; pretty hooked now. The artwork pulled me in, and it carries the story well (sure yeah, others’ points about backgrounds stand, but the emotional presence in the characters is there, and that’s the crucial thing – the rest’ll come). Lots of ideas in it that I like; I’m excited to see where you’re taking it.
Thanks! I’m glad you found us thanks to sister Claire. I love sister claire!
Heh, either way, the art always gets better, and i’m pretty proud of how expressive the characters are, so stuff is still pretty awesome!
Been reading through the archives like a madman. I love EVERYTHING I’ve read, but this THIS most of all. This is simply fantastic!!
This is one of my favorite pages as well.
Being a writer myself, I especially like this page. I love when writers have special powers.
Supposition #2
Elaine is responsible for turning Emma into a namesake. Of course, that would mean someone has been writing a story with her big sister as a protagonist… Makes one rather curious as to the nature of that story.
On with the archive crawl…
Is he actually speaking English or is that just what they’re hearing? BTW Love this comic
Oh it’s like this movie that’s coming out soon, about this guy who wrote a novel and the irl from it came alive and he could change her with what he wrote.
What kind of an accent would Fred here have?
Also, since humans can learn the Language of the Deck, does Fred still know it?
