Ok… so trying to teach a playing card how to play a video game? Well, thats another thing to add to my list of things I want to but may never actually do.
Aw, poor Fred. He looks cute with the hair though.
I took it to mean, in the context of this comic, “Writer”. That makes sense, doesn’t it? Anyway, first time commenting and can I just say I love the comic!
Maybe the power behind Namesakes is the writer? The one who writes the story, and not the hero? I mean… Maybe if you compose a story in your mind, it opens a portal through the world you imagined and your own. Then Elain could plot what she wants to happen, and a namesake would appear to fill the hole. Maybe in stead of doing her homework Elain wished that someone would solve all the problems in other worlds once and for all, so that she wouldn’t have any more homework to do. And Emma was sucked in to perform that role.
It’s why Persephone had to stay with Hades 4 months a year. It also made Chihiro substantial in the spirit’s world as well as turning her poor parents to pigs.
I like the possibility of him being bound through this realm’s food. He does seem to be acting as though he nver had hair. It makes a great deal of sense.
However, I think it’s because she gave him A NAME.
A Name that he ACCEPTED.
This is “Namesake”, after all, where we KNOW names have power.
By accepting a name, he became real.
Note that his face looks different. It MAY be a matter of the character drawing style evolving — we’re still early days in this webcomic — but when he first appeared there was something slightly creepy and simplistic/stylized about him. His nose didn’t just look pointy, it ended in a heart. His eyes were blank and round.
Now his nose looks merely pointed — a shape that a real human nose might have. He has eyes with normal white, iris, and pupil (okay, the iris is red but that makes sense). He’s behaving more like a human being.
He sat unmoving for an entire night. Human beings CAN’T do that.
He displayed emotion now, while before he seemed robotic, an automaton.
He started acting strangely before she gave him a name though right? Talking and appearing to show some emotion towards Elaine’s crying. Maybe giving him a name prompted actual physical change but giving him food made him have emotions or something?
Or there’s my earlier theory, that Wendy (“Oh, I’ve always liked that one”) had been giving the Five of Hearts some special attention earlier on — in which case it/he may have been more open to Elaine’s creative input than might otherwise have been the case.
Extra points towards the naming leading to change if namast is name!
Also it’s doubtful that the art is changing that fast. The only other character who’s face changed that much so quickly was the ghost, and that’s revealed as being on purpose. Also, I think his eyes were about the same… just not freaking-out-over-hair large.
I’d like to think its an interaction effect. Sharing food has powerful symbolism, though the name was certainly important. Perhaps the name caused the transformation and the food helped ground what Fred would turn into. I mean, a Fred doesn’t have a specific look, but the juice was made by and for humans…
I’m looking forward to what Calliope has to say about this! Perhaps an explanation will occur.
I agree. I don’t think just anyone can give a name though, I think only a namesake has that kind of power. If that’s right, then he may have just realized he’s guarding an undiscovered namesake.
More importantly, has Elaine’s interference in Freds nature
leading up to his (partial?) transformation to the human
state also reduced his abilities as a protector-bot?
I’ve been wondering if Elaine has mysterious powers ever since Fred started speaking English. Surely he’s hung around Alice and Calliope long enough that he would have picked up some English by now if he could. Fred’s apparent personality change (as described by Ryk E. Spoor) further supports this.
Also, since Elaine is so bright and outgoing (especially in contrast to Emma, who seems more serious and introverted) it makes sense that her powers would involve getting others to communicate. Anyone remember her trying to teach kindergardeners to text?
Not sure if Elaine is a namesake per se, though. Emma is clearly not a normal namesake (being in Oz and all), and like Emma, Elaine’s name is not an obvious reference to any public domain fairy tales or fantasy stories that I can think of. I suspect that she will turn out to be unusual in some way that complements Emma’s unusual-ness. This chapter cover strongly suggests that these sisters will complement each other in a lot of ways, just as their personalities seem to do.
Hmmmm… I wonder if the symbols language can be translated, like a code. I’ve come across at least one series where a language was in fact written as a cypher…

Uuuuh, I guess cards aren’t supposed to have hair?
Don’t wake up Elaine, she just went to sleep!
does writah mean wake up? or am i just getting to into his language XD

that’s what I thought. Since a writer could change a story, maybe he’s changing with it.

*That* is Amazing~
Hmm…in some fairytales and myths, eating or drinking from a realm not of your own ends up binding you there…and Elaine did give him juice…

Is it me, or is it Fwed kinda cute?

Oooh I love stories that spark posts like this. The speculation is so deliciooouuuuussss. *_*

Or a writer. Writers often feel that characters don’t really solidify until they have a name, and I think “writer” is what Fred is trying to say.
Soooo the fact that Fwed is growing hair means Eileen is a writer?
And by Eileen I mean Elaine.
I need sleep.
More importantly, has Elaine’s interference in Freds nature

Aww, it’s cute that Ben’s playing video games with fred.
Sooo, I take it hair is a new thing to Fred?

Yay! The consequences of his naming! I’ve been waiting for this. Just wait till Alice sees this.
And an interesting bit of name trivia:
In old Norse society, a child wasn’t considered to have a soul until it had a name.
Poor Fred! The little Writer influenced you! (*has flashes to Princess Tutu and the young Writer…*)
Princess Tutu and Author!
Haha. All your base are belong to Drosselmeyer.
Completely out of context but related to my last post….Miss Isa, the name of the tale is called “the nose tree”.

“I must tell her that the Rogaine finally worked! I have hair!”
I’d freak out too if my hair were growing that fast!
Hmmmm… I wonder if the symbols language can be translated, like a code. I’ve come across at least one series where a language was in fact written as a cypher…
Evolution!
Oh, of course. He’s a Pokemon. “FWED, I CHOOSE YOU!”
He did come in a handy-dandy small (card) form.
I love how he talks in suits. You two must teach me this suit language.
But wait, Fred isn’t a five red, he’s a five of hearts. His name must be. . .Fharts.
*reading with seriousface on* . . . *sudden burst into immature laughter*
He looks quite Greek now.
wayyyyy cute~
