Hmmm, what is this mysterious blue liquid I wonder?
Also, I think Bird has a bit of a crush on Nose.
Did you come here impatiently right at 12:00 to see Tuesday’s strip too, or was that just coincidence?
Yeah i’m kinda obsessed with this comic.
Yes I did!
Yeah, I got a little worried because it wasn’t up until 12:01. XD
Huh, that’s weird. All the pages are scheduled to auto-publish at midnight.
Haha, wiped… nose… clever. ^_^
Apparently whatever is in that vial tastes awful. Well no shit Sherlock, that’s pretty obvious! What do we have here going on between Nose and Bird? :3 Possible new pairing? Maybe not, whateva.
I dub this ship “beak”.
Lol that’s cute! You’re funny Isa. :3
Bubbles=bad things in the Namesake universe I’ve decided, also that this is probably the only universe out there where this is true. XD
I never thought that we could feel sympathy for the bad guys, but you ladies are great in creating multi dimensional characters. I’ve started to like Vanessa quite a bit!
Thanks! I like her a lot too.
That Nose is (apparently) a magic-addict does sort of give him a sympathy card for what he’s done. Even so, this does not outweigh the despicable things he and the other Rippers have done / are doing. He’s a cute drug addict. He suffering, but he hurts others. Think about it: They’re trying to permanently remove Emma’s abilities, steal her magical artifact(s), erase her memories, and make sure Calliope never meets her. Add to this the fact that the Rippers are not above MURDERING even crippled, former Namesakes to achieve their ends (such as the girl in the library that burned down). Granted, we don’t really know the stories behind Nose or other Rippers. But I just can’t sympathize with them.
Then again, Calliope’s methods can be harsh, too. It’s been stated that standard procedure is to execute someone possessed by a ghost. In other circumstances Calliope may well have had to kill Emma ‘for the greater good’.
To be fair, Vanessa was the only one who killed the red-shoes lady whose name escapes me at the moment. The others seemed to think it was unnecessary.
And considering how morally ambiguous everything is at the moment, I’m trying not to judge prematurely. We still don’t know WHY Nose put the mask on Emma or why they want to keep her away fe
… From Calliope. Everyone so far seems to think they’re in the right.
(Hit ‘return’ by accident. Dang inconvenient convenient mobile device.)
Also, i would like to add that Jack from Calliope, the supposed “good guys,” was also supposed to kill Karen if/ when he discovered the ghost. What I love about this comic is that there are no clear cut “good” and “bad” when it comes to these groups as a whole as well as certain individuals!
I agree that Calliope is a dubious organization as well. They certainly haven’t given much if any information to Ben and Ellaine as to what’s happening. The only real difference between them and the Rippers from what WE know is that the Rippers act as ambiguous as they appear; Calliope just has a questionable stand-offish (if sometimes compassionate) approach to those involved in their affairs.
I like it better this way; the ambiguity helps make the world feel more realistic, especially considering that these scenarios tend to unfold like this in real-life as well (only without all the magic and stuff).
While I certainly don’t approve of the methods that either Calliope or the Rippers use (either way, Karen would’ve been killed regardless. Whether by Vanessa or by Jack. So obviously both groups aren’t above killing people. Even if the motivations happen to be different), I do find that I can’t completely condemn the bad guys as being wholly bad and the good guys as being wholly good.
While it does seem that one group is genuinely more good than the other, we still don’t know the full story behind either group. There could be a lot more going on here than we know. Especially regarding the Rippers. Their purpose hasn’t really been explained at all yet.
It is really interesting though how the characters on either side so far are proving to be really thought out. We’re able to sympathize (somewhat) with the Rippers characters (maybe not Fish so much though…), and we can question some of the things that Calliope members do. And I think that’s a really good dynamic to have.
Wow! I just found this comic yesterday (how is it that I haven’t stumbled upon it before?!) and it is one of the greatest and most beautiful stories/comics I have seen/read on the internet so far! I can’t wait for more!!!!!
I would also love to buy your two books, but it doesn’t look like you´re selling them in your store? Are you planning on printing more in the future or not until you have your third one ready? Anyway, thanks a lot for creating and sharing this! <3
Hi Maja! We’ll be doing pre-orders on book 2 soon, we just finished a Kickstarter for it. You can buy book 1 here! Welcome to the comic!
Thanks a lot!
Not a problem! I saw your order came through, so I’ll be shipping it out in the next couple of days.
I just found the comic yesterday too! Well, by “yesterday” I mean it’s 12:46am, and I started on page 1 around 9pm (yesterday), four hours ago. The art style is awesome! I love the black and white with minimal color palette.
Wow! You win on archive-reading! *high-five*
I JUST FIGURED OUT THE PUN IN THE TITLE I CAN’T EVEN AAAH
Is that nuke he’s using?
Poor Nose. He should wait until he reached whatever room he bunks in before he takes that medicine since it along with the tiredness he’s experiencing seems to have knocked out and now he’s blocking 1′s office door. *lol*
It doesn’t really seem like it helped, Nose… :/
Theory: since namesakes are magical, that magic is tied to their lifeforce/soul/whatever. Normally, they generate magic naturally, but when the nameless gave up their names, they gave up the ability to regenerate their own magic, or they regenerate slower–but they still need it to live.
Don’t know if anybody said anything like that yet, or if I’m completely off base here, though.
Not much direct evidence for that theory, but then we’ve not had a large sample size of data on these “Rippers” to compare against. But still a conjecture worth experimenting with!
Vanessa’s look is totally touching; maybe the ‘bad’ guys are not so bad and maybe the ‘good’ guys are not so good, who knows? this is getting interesting and interesting
You know, I’ve only just realized something. We know that Calliope works to make sure their Namesakes make it back from their adventures alive, but is that always possible? How many fairy tales, novels, dramas, etc, end with the main character dying tragically, heroically, etc? Maybe the Rippers do what they do because they are the Namesakes who have to sacrifice themselves for the story. They are the Don Quixote de la Manchas, the Arthur Dents, the heroes or villains who must be sacrificed in the name of the story and the continuation of these other magical worlds. I don’t know about you, but if that was my destiny, I’d give considerable thought to selling my name, too.
That’s been my thought for a while as well, that the Rippers are ones destined to have a hard time of it. They might die, but they could also just have a really long journey, or torturous experience. Who would want to be Ulysses and spend decades away from home running from cyclops, sirens, and harpies?
The other thought is that IsaMeg has said somewhere in the commentary of a previous page that the Namesake of a story isn’t always the protagonist. That leaves it open to all the villains, anti-heroes, and minor characters that are just fleshed out enough to have a back story.
oh Nose… you poor thing ;-;
ermergersh! I can totally understand why she likes Nose, especially in this strip! :3
I just finished reading through all of the archives, and I’m am soooo impressed by this comic!! I had read some of it a while ago, and I was kind of turned off a bit, but when I went through this time it seems like there was a lot that was added to the story, and I absolutely loved it!! Can’t wait to read more! And I LOVE the artwork!
I wonder what story Nose is from? And bird, for that matter.
Bird is from The Firebird, a Russian children’s story.
Who knows what Nose is from, but at the moment I like the Cyrano theory. XD
I think Nose really believes “sealing” Emma is in her best interests and will protect her from the consequences of her powers. (He is apparently sealed himself, since he also wears a mask, so whatever his story is, he doesn’t remember it.) One knows more than he tells his minions, but I don’t think he knows about the spirit she released to get the sword,. With her memories repressed, no one knows about that, and I think that’s going to be very bad very soon. Both Calliope and the Rippers think they know how it all works, but they’re both about to find out their world is bigger and more dangerous than they thought.
Interesting theory. It keeps up the suspense, too, so the Evil Isameg might go that way.
Is he… Is he DRINKNING that stuff from Emma’s ghost?!
I think the blue just indicates magic, or a certain kind of magic.
Nose is starting to look like Warrick. WHY IS NOSE STARTING TO LOOK LIKE WARRICK?
Because their angst levels now match?
Don’t worry Warrick, you still win in the immature anger category. FOR NOW.
They also both have wacky nose.
By the Bangs of Isa, it’s over 9000!
The key is suffering on the inside, not brooding, ocassionally drop a one-liner. As for Warrick, *trombone.wav*
Warrick still has a better tneme song! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpiIWMWWVco )
Here’s hoping it was poisoned! Cheers, Nose.
OH my gosh the little cartoon you drew!!! The fact that you guys respond so quickly to your fans is so heartwarming to me! You really care about this fandom!!! and NOOOOOO!! Warwick still has the angst throne as far as I’m concerned!! haha, as soon as my plate is clean and I have time I am sending you guys some much needed fan art. I love these characters so dearly, you make them all great.
We try to read all the comments as much as possible. We can’t answer everyone, but we try!
I second that. Mainly because I still don’t know why Nose is supposedly THAT sad. Warrick seems to have more to regret.
I ship bird and nose now. omg.
Why not let 72 in on it while you’re at it?
