Things seem to be getting a little more interesting. What’s in that vial? Also what do they want with the sword? Hope it magically teleports back to Emma, love to see the look on all their faces when and if that happens. :3 Mwha ha ha ha! XD
I was kind of thinking that perhaps the ghost wants that sword back…
Wait, but wasn’t the sword used to pin the ghost down? So why would it want the sword back?
Meh… Law of Common Tropes. If an evil being is vulnerable to something, it will try to destroy/gain control of that thing.
I’m not quite sure what’s going on with Nose’s face, I thought at first that those were cuts, but they don’t seem to bleed. Dirt perhaps.
He looks younger in panel three to me. I wonder if One stands in some parental role to Nose? He does seem extra-ordinarily tired. That blue vial looks the same color as magic. Concentrated magic maybe?
Could the damage to his face be from removing his own mask?
They are burns from Emma’s magic ka-blooey
Thank you, burns make sense.
I absolutely love your wording. ‘Magical ka-blooey’, simply outstanding. I’m not being sarcastic or anything, by the way. People seem to hear my words as sarcastic when they actually aren’t.
Hmm… I’ve been thinking more of, are they scars? And if so, what are the scars from?
I really hope that sword has protection magic on it and shocks one…
So One gave him magical 5 hour energy.
Blue raspberry flavor!
I wonder which story did the sword actually belong to? It seems like it may be the same as the red dancing shoes that the Nameless attempted to retrieve.
I’m going to guess ‘The Princess Bride’
or maybe the 3 Musketeers. It looks like one of their swords. *lol*
It makes me think of La Verdad/The Sword of Truth for some reason. .-. Its concept was used in so many different stories so far…
Hey I have a question. On your Cast page, you said the Rippers were FORMER Namesakes. So if Bird is a Namesake, what fairytail character does she represent with a name like Vanessa?
Vanessa is from The Firebird tales.
Wow, reading that I realized my parents had a VHS tape (in Russian) with an animated story of the Archer running around to do the kings bidding! Except he had to go through 3 barrels, boiling hot water, freezing cold water, and I can’t remember the last one…
Reminds me of all these old animation tapes my parents had of these sort of stories!! Aw now I wish i could go back and see them…
Still trying to figure out from what tale is Nose a Namesake *thinking, thinking*
Anyway, wonder what’s in that vial; another ‘accesory’ from the fairytail perhaps?
I’m thinking Nose is Pinocchio. I’m not overly sure but it would make sense with his name.
Maybe. But he might also be Cyrano, or Prince Hyacinth. We’ll just have see in due time.
After reading Prince Hyacinth, I really like that story for him. I think it fits him well for what he’s done and what we’ve seen so far.
Two problems for it though. One is who would name their child Hyacinth and the second is why would he want to give up his namesake? It doesn’t seem like such a bad story that someone wouldn’t want to live it. Though maybe just having the name “Hyacinth” might be enough…
You might be right about, there could be lots of possibilities, those two ideas might be closer to the truth for who he might be. For Fish, the two possibilities for what i think she might be, are “The Little Mermaid” or “Ondine”.
I’ve been trying to figure her out too! I checked through some of the archives and it’s been stated pretty definitively that she’s not from the Little Mermaid. Ondine is still up though. I keep coming back to Nyx for her too.
Cyrano de Bergerac?
I might be overthinking it, but this page made Nose look like some magical-blue-liquid-junkie or something.
“Magic addicts” collect magical artifacts, according to Alice. So does One. Could he be distilling something from them?
If so, it’s a slippery slope for their morality, regardless of how they started out.
I agree. I felt the same way. Maybe Nose sold his name to feed his habit. Doesn’t necessarily make One bad tho. If Nose already had the habit when he came to One, its possible One has been trying to wean him. I mean One didn’t look like he really wanted to give it to Nose.
Then again, maybe he caused an addiction so the Rippers would need him.
I really want to know more about One.
You know, 1 reminds me a bit of Lewis Carrol, in appearance, as much as we’ve seen of him.
Also, I was right! I was right! The blue stuff is in the Nameless’s evil use and under their control!
I totally said that last time about Lewis Carroll. Nice to know I’m not the only one who sees a resemblance.
I mentioned it too, along with the (little accepted) theory that Carroll (real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was Jack the Ripper (the source for the name Rippers?).
There was a page of previous from this chapter (calliope to the rescue, warrick/emma reunion, etc) – and I can’t find it anywhere- did you gals took it down?
It’s still up. It’s the preview page right before chapter 11 begins and advances the current arc. You can see it here.
I don’t know if this has been mentioned before but Nose is wearing what looks like a fencer’s jacket.
Interesting directions we’re going. It’s clear that this organization is not the nice guys, but Nose doesn’t seem entirely conscienceless. I have to wonder what it is that they do to recruit these people and take their names, and what the overall purpose is.
Methinks I see some magical heroin.
I like the way that you guys subtly feed us the feeling that the Nameless are a bloody handed hierarchy. Fish conning “little Bird” out of the red shoes. Fish and Bird telling Nose that One is pissed off at him. And when Nose is in One’s office, it’s yes sir, no sir with his eyes down-cast. One always speaking in an imperative tone.
None of that “I find your lack of faith disturbing, * Acckk! Choke..”
Especially in light of my previous comment, I love the trust and caring between Nose and “Little Bird”. I can see them taking respite from their hard work and treacherous associates in a nice warm bed somewhere.
… does he have 6 fingers in frame 6..
My fault. I re-drew the hand twice and forgot to remove some of the old version’s lines.
I did NOT notice that!!
But don’t worry, it’s rather small and barely noticeable, nor is that new . . . I remember how somebody accidentally gave (Disney) Aladdin 6 fingers in one hand as well (on the page with the Cave of Wonders) in that “press a sound button” book from long ago.
First if all, WOW! And second of all, what story was Fish originally from? The little mermaid or something? Also great job on the comic. It is amazing.
Fish’s story has not been revealed yet…
ARGHHHHHH HES A DRUGGIE!!!! D:
Also I am REALLY missing Warwick. I just want him to pop up somewhere in the real world and scare the crap out of the normal folks because of his green skin!
I want him to pop up out of nowhere and scare Emma. Or Elaine, whichever…
There goes Theory: he is the Six-fingered Man
Yup, he is definitely from ‘The Princess Bride’…he has self esteem issues from that.
An energy pill? Go drink something with caffeine like the rest of the normal adults,55.
this comic is fucking brilliant! i follow a ton of webcomics but this is the first one that strikes me as actually something that should become canonical literature because it nails so many mythological conjectures into a well crafted, definitive, and original narrative. uuuhh..i’m too tired to expound on that atm because i spend much of the evening reading all of volume 1 and am not in the midst of wading through volume 2…but damn this shit is good!
Unorthodox choice of wording despite common content theme. +1 point.
im back! woot. anyways…not sure if anyone made this joke yet…
Avez-vous lu le tome de Jérémiah appelé “Un cobaye pour l’éternité”?
La case avec la fiole m’y a immédiatement fait penser, et pourtant cela fait plus d’une décennie que je l’ai lu…
the plot thickens…
Started the series last night and i can say its been a jolly 24hrs..
Great job IsaMeg.. love your work..
Reminder guys! Namesake is dropping in rank at Top webcomics! Help other people learn about this AWESOME story by voting here! http://www.topwebcomics.com/vote/12744/default.aspx Vote often and spread the IsaMeg love!
I think, I _think_, I finally caught up to where I left off. I hate losing track of a webcomic, especially when it’s been more than a year, lol.
