Anything Selva can do, Warrick wants to do better
on July 17, 2012 at 1:00 amSorry for the delay, guys! I was looking at the page earlier and noticed a spelling error. So, I pulled it until I got home from work.
I did think of some creative excuses. Like being eaten by a gila monster. Or being chased by a swarm of eccentric bees.

Oh Ozma, sweetie, you worry me. A lot. How does everyone deal with you?
Warrick you precious little thing. I just want to pinch your cheeks. I love how he tries to be all alpha mae but in terms of sheer offensive power is continually outclassed by the ladies around him.
Yes, it is cute how Warrick is so enthusiastic about the prospect of blowing things up and acting like a typical guy. He’s obviously jealous of Selva and…
Wait a minute: Selva can throw big flaming balls of energy?! I don’t think we’ve ever seen her do that. Hmm… I really thought that was Hercilia’s shtick.
Meg / Isa: In panel 8 (second to last), I think it would have sounded better for Ozma to say, “Even I don’t have the ability to do that.” I think that’s proper grammar.
Selva can do a bit more offensively than Warrick. Remember who’s speaking here — a little boy. Little boys can exaggerate just a bit.
I have two brothers. They could exaggerate a lot … especially when it came to getting their baby sister in trouble!
I kinda love the look on Ozma’s face in the second to last panel.
Well in Oz, females tend to be the more dominant gender, so they might be more powerful, or have more abilities. Also poor Ozma. :’( I think she never truly got over her first crush; Dorothy Gale. And with the other Dorothies she may have thought that D.G. came back to her in some way, this slowly eroding her sanity and heart. Somewhat like the Witch from the webcomic “No Rest For The Wicked”, she went crazy after she ate her own chldren Hansel and Gretel. Thinking they escaped out of her body, and keep coming back as other people.
Ooh, the Related Comics feature looks new. Is that a Comic Easel thing? *puts nerdy software glasses on* That’ll make it easier when we forget certain factoids about characters or events, and we want to quickly reference back without digging through whole chapters!
Also, cute Ozma, silly Warrick.
Quick question: will Ozma’s existence as Tip ever be a story point? (I can’t remember if it was already stated or not.)
The whole Tip affair was stated by the Scarecrow when he was telling Emma about Oz, but since it’s far in the past, it won’t really appear in the main story. It’s a segment I love too, which is why I made sure to at least mention it, but it’s completely irrelevant to the storyline. We are trying to make sure to not just throw stuff in because we like it *laughs* IT’S HARD…
I can’t take the suspense! I feel like at any moment we’re gonna have a Warrick bleeding out on the floor-or worse, Emma! Oh Warrick you’re…so…cute as a kid…
Hercilia loves to burn things and blow them up. Selva’s shtick seems to be transformation magic or polymorphing people into objects. Both are quite powerful. Warrick’s shtick of being a healer-type, with Heal, Aid-or-Build, and Protect is also powerful. In some ways it’s even more powerful. But it’s not offensive in the least.
BTW, remember this page?: http://www.namesakecomic.com/comic/nothing-worth-discussing/
Warrick asks the Tin Man why they couldn’t give The Dorthy a body like the Tin Man or Scarecrow so they wouldn’t die. The Tin Man replies that they’ve, “checked into a number of ways to save her.” But when Warrick pushed the Tin Man said it was “nothing worth mentioning.”
My point? I wonder if IT – that THING – was a product of one of their experiments?
Wait, what? Sudden flashback? That’s just evil…
You evil, evil people. Flashback NOW?
Sorry, Warrick. You have HEALING powers, which are the useful but mocked ones in adventuring terms. You’re a cleric, not a mage. Now, if you lived in OUR world you could watch the Mythbusters and learn what you should not be doing at home.
I bet he’s love the mythbusters too.
I know I do!
So, we’re supposed to gather from this that Warrick is going to Protect Emma?
That’s my guess too. A short explanation on why Warrick isn’t blowing things up. Doesn’t mean Hercilia couldn’t make with exploding fireballs while Warrick Protects Emma from the fire too. His whole posture was protection in the last panel of the previous page too.
He’s an adorable little boy, the look of dismay on his face when Ozma doesn’t recognize him is perfect, as is the delight at the idea of fireballs.
He was a cute kid. Before all the angst. I actually modelled the “kid” version on my little brother back when he was younger. He always wanted to hang out with his sister and not at the same time.
Hercilia. Exploding fireballs. This is the answer to ALL your problems.
Hey, it’s a well known fact that the best defense is a good offense…and the bigger the fireballs the better the defense!
Ah, sibling competition… you never quite escape it.
The melancholy in Ozma’s face and look is both magnificent and heart-breaking…
I’m a bit less fan of the simplification on panel 6, though.
Ahahaha, Warrick, the healing classes are under appreciated, but you will come to know how awesome they are. After all, if you’re the healer, you get to tell the meat shields to stop slacking over piddly flesh wounds!
I just ran an instance where no one noticed the healer (ME!) was getting mana back from the boss. They triggered the boss and a RING OF FLAME ERUPTED! Right on ME! Dead.
When the healer dies, most times, Everybody Dies.
Love your healer. Cuddle your healer. Healer needs tank, tank needs healer, and you’ve got 3 DPS ’cause they’re expendable.
(I actually like DPSing, too; it’s nice to be focused on only 2 things — making the damage go up, and moving out of the Bad. …MOVE OUT OF THE BAD, EMMA! You don’t know if he can heal through the Bad!)
Ah, WoW player too? I played for several years. I’ve been tempted to get back into it.
Never played WoW. (But I have a friend who roped me into DDO.) As such, whenever I hear about WoW, I’m reminded of a “Leeroy Jenkins” battle cry, South Park Season 10 Episode 8 “Make Love Not Warcraft”, and Season 2 of Phaylen Fairchild’s DiVAs webseries.
Speaking from RPG experience, it’s not uncommon to take the party healer for granted and/or blame them for death / quest failure. Yet, at the same time, I’ve seen healers who don’t prioritize the healing. Having played them before, it’s not an easy task and it’s easy to get too wrapped up in the fight itself.
And, yes, without a healer the party is usually done for.
Warrick, why are you so cute?! I just want to give him a big, squishy, hug!
And, Warrick, there’s nothing wrong with not being able to blow things up. I wish /I/ had healing powers like you. You’re amazing, don’t ever forget that.
Yeah, that’s what I’d say to him… Well, amidst all the fangirling and stuff…
The best defence, ah, protection is a good offence.
I forgot to say that all the shades of green are very calming after the previous page’s scariness.
So wait, in addition to being able to perform healing magic, he might also be able to create magical barriers/forcefields(Which can sometimes be used offensively, especially if you can manipulate the size and shape at will), and maybe even build stuff on the fly(Possibly even FMA style alchemical building, which can of course be used offensively)
So possible offense, Squish the enemy between the local environment/forcefield or two force fields…
Magically build a bunch of spears to skewer the monster, build a weapon from the environment and use it… Make a Golem to defend you, or even make ten… (Wasn’t there that clockwork solder that appeared in the squeal wizard of Oz movie? Warreck could build some of those maybe…)
I’m imagining sweet, flowy, flute music while Ozma is talking about the wonders of heling powers, then Warrick cuts in with his fire ball talk and the needle scratches off the record.
**HEALING*** not helling.
Awww, I want helling powers….
Yes, Helling powers are what Hercilia uses…
Tasogare yori mo kuraki mono
Chi no nagare yori akaki mono
Toki no nagare ni utsumoreshi
Idainaru nanji no na ni oite
Ware koko ni yami ni chikawan
Warera ga mae ni tachi fusagarishi
Subete no orokanaru mono ni
Ware to nanji ga chikara mote

DRAGON SLAVE!
Aww, poor Warrick. His sister has all the cool abilities, and is better at them.
But, the characters with boring weak powers like healing usually turn out to be really powerful in a way they don’t expect.
Oh, by the way, Ozma’s Z thing looks different in the fourth panel. In the first and seventh panels, it’s level, but in the fourth panel, it’s… well… more like the Z and the circle are rounded? Maybe like, in the 1st and 7th ones, it looks like a flat coin with cutouts in it, while in the fourth, it looks more like the Z and circle are embossed.
With a bit of deviousness, the “aid or build” suite of powers could be used to incapacitate/kill an enemy. Enhance their muscle growth… but not their skeleton or cardiovascular support. They’ll be so huge, they can’t support their own weight, or simply die from congestive heart failure.
And then there’s “protection.” I wonder if we can protect someone from oxygen? After all, slow oxidization is also known as rust, and rapid oxidization is fire. It’s quite a dangerous substance if you’re not careful with it, hehehe. Breathing? That’s not important, is it?
Love the title of this page.
