Ha. Kind of ironic that in the movie (never read the books, unfortunately) the scarecrow was searching for a brain. It sounds like he’s got a pretty good brain right now.
Yup! The Scarecrow has a fine set of brains at this point, as he never fails to remind us in subsequent books. I do plan to have a section with links to the public-domain works featured in Namesake in the near future. The books are definitely worth a read. I have them on my Kindle.
Even before he got his diplomain the movie, the scarecrow was the one with the brains – he figured out how to get into the witches castle! In the first book, the wizard didn’t give him a diploma – he took off the head, emptied the straw, and filled it with pins and tacks so the scarecrow would always be “sharp”…
The scarecrow was immune to the poppies, since he didn’t breathe. But since when do poppies grow vines…??
In the original book, it was clear that all three of the seekers already HAD what they were looking for. The Scarecrow thought them out of several problems, the Cowardly Lion bravely faced danger to protect the others, and the Tin Woodman demonstrated his kindliness and compassion several times. In the book, the Wizard mixed up a combination of (I think) oatmeal with pins and needles to give the Scarecrow a “sharp” brain, installed a soft velvet heart inside the Tin Man’s chest, and gave the Lion a drink of liquid courage (which from the description was almost certainly booze, AKA “Dutch Courage” in those days).
The Wizard was a humbug but he was an EXCEEDINGLY clever humbug and showman. Later on he actually becomes a real Wizard.
Fire truly is your fallback, Megs
And great use of red, Isa!
Thanks! I’m trying to make better use of the coloring. I hope it works nicely.

It’s Oz… when does ANYTHING happen, appear, or act like it should? XD

Hooray! Maybe the Scarecrow and his brans– er, brains will help them save the day?
You win at the pun award.
Oh sweet! Scarecrow makes his appearance! XD
I could not leave him out. I’m his biggest fan.
I suppose in theory the Tinman could go through the poppies, find all the sleeping people, pull them out, and then they could torch the site.
It’s not a bad plan!
I was right! It WAS a Scarecrow!
Also, if fire isn’t the solution, you obviously weren’t using ENOUGH of it!!
Needs more flamethrowiness.
But..but fire solves everything!!
…Unless you’re fighting a fire spirit or something. Those clever jerks!
No, you just need MORE FIRE. See “Dark Schneider” for details.
Joel: Fire solves everything? I never heard of that.
Servo: I prefer plans which involve luring the monster into the high tension lines or a nuclear reactor.
Joel: But there is no monster.
Servo: See how well it worked?
Crow: Well, I think fire is still a useful option. For example, it makes taking inventory at the munitions plant simple and quick.
OMG SCARECROW!
I did so love the little guy in the book. ♥
Same here. He’s pretty much my overall favorite. Him and the Tinman are badass.
There’s always explosives…
Yes! Genius!
Great work. Really good storytelling. Loving this comic.
Aw, thanks! I hope you’ll keep reading and enjoying it!
I will. I am a huge fan of this comic. Got her via _Girl Genius_, btw. n
Woot! Scarecrow!
Agreed! He’s hilariously fun to draw. So i’m quite happy he’s around.
How about weedkiller? Or better yet, weedkiller ON FIRE!!!! I don’t even know if that second makes sense.
Flammable weedkiller! It’s GENIUS!!!!
Also: if the Scarecrow tried to start a fire, wouldn’t he risk setting himself on fire?
He said he thought about it… then maybe he considered the down points.
Maybe he should have his clothes made of asbestos or something! Fire-retardant scarecrow!
I feel a rush of scarecrow fanart coming on x__x
And now a new film will be coming out in 2013 about that humbug and how he got to Oz and what he did there.
