I thought Emma had met some helpful spirits here in the Inbetween. Then evil Isameg changes the friendly spirit to a mask hels but ANOTHER spirit.
How deep does your rabbit warren go!!!!
Well now I get the whole “Why” and “How could you” statements from the masks after Emma was first shown the sword. I trust that they probably know more about the whole situation than even Renge and she and the scarecrow are the only ones that knew what the creature ‘it’ was.
I cannot identify a person by their mouth in profile. This is suddenly frustrating.
The hair makes me think Ozma, but her body is encased in vines and hopefully alive.
An interesting turn of events, these ghosts have been imprisoned for so long yet they still are willing to wait and Help Emma, I think, the mask symbolizes change, ’cause when you but a mask on your face technically changes, becomes something different, and you can choose which mask to wear, what to become. So maybe it’s like ‘I’ll take off my mask and show you my true self, I’ll show your the road and the secret ones as well’ . The ghost are like a mask, a change from evil to good, change her perspective and help her see the things she couldn’t see before. I don’t know, these are just the thought that popped into my head as I read this, the masks might not play a very big part, maybe they will, I remember seeing them on a chapter cover also… Who knows..
For its length, this dialog was painfully short on specifics. >_>
I’m not sure what the ghost is trying to say. First, she(?) made it look like releasing the ghost was a very bad thing, but then she says that doing so lets Emma change her fate, which is something she “must” do, thus… releasing the ghost was actually necessary?
Wow! This page is beautiful. The way she lifts the mask from her face in the last panel looks really fluid, I love how the mask looks like it’s floating between her fingers
I have a theory as to who these masks are, or at least the people behind them! I think they’re the souls of Namesakes who sold their names, like 46/Vanessa and Fish; the monster that was trapped by the sword is who they sell their names to! I’m probably completely off the mark, but that is my theory.
I love the last panel, although I don’t like seein Emma in pain. As Robin said, the way the ghost removes the mask is memorable. Interesting hypothesis about the identity of the masked characters Robin.
. The ghost reminds me of a dark haired Lady Godiva!
Heh, my hypothesis is the ghost was Ozma and the trapped spirits are all of the Dorotheas she couldn’t let go of even after death.
I’m probably wrong though.
Well Ozma seems to be implied to be a faerie…. Maybe she didn’t mean to trap them, but I’m thinking maybe the “bad” spirit was a Dorothy too… and Osma’s attempts to sheild them from death created the mass of Dorothy ghosts mashed together(The masks being their shields against “death”) Or maybe it’s something older that was imprisioned by the same sort of magic that the Ozma was trying to preserve the Dorothys with and ended up imprisoning them as well, and leaving it alone with them corrupting most of them over time…
Just got done reading this….after being glued to the chair for two days(minus the normal day to day activities..). Your art style reminds me of another from somewhere, but when I try to recall it….it slips away.
The story is superb, the concept beautifully unique, yet also reminiscent. It reverberates deep in my soul, reminding me that I was once a traveler of worlds. I love especially how you reveal key details of the overall all plot through “Alice’s backstory”….without actually revealing any of the current plot. Very well structured throughout.
I congratulate and applaud your work, and look forward to the next page. Thank you for reminding me why I write.
I feel like this spirit could be a Dorothy or Ozma, but for some reason I also wonder if it’s Emma’s mom. Emma’s mom seems mysterious and potentially mystical.
If yeh had the chance to change yer fate… wouldjeh?
Couldn’t help but think of that tagline. Also, I am officially invested in this story. It’s just really nicely, richly complex and I love it. Well done.
Curiouser and curiouser…
Ah dang-it, you beat me to the punch!
Oh, dear. Oh, dear. Just taking recent history into account, that phrase leads to bad places.
Uhhh.. Which phrase Kitesareevil?
“…but we want to help.”
“You must change your fate.”

Now things are moving in a whole new direction. So now we have a new ghost ,who’s good? I hope we get to see some of the other guys soon?
Something tells me that mask is not going to help Emma with anything.
Ozma? Is that you? Or is it Glenda or another Dorothy? Pure speculation here, I have NO CLUE. WHY ARE YOU SO FAR AWAY SATURDAY!?!?!?!

i see someone may have watched and been inspired by Pixar’s Brave!
i wonder where this will take Emma?

I’m pretty sure Emma has to change her fate BECAUSE she let the spirit go. But in letting it go, she gained the POWER to change her fate.
but that’s just my interpretation.
For some reason this sequence is reminding me of Persona 3 and 4.

sounds like a good theory to me~!

The spirits are leaving… to go where?
Given that we are having foreboding discussions of fate, my first guess is that the ghost is some form of future!Emma or alternative!Emma.
Robin’s guess is also good. It’s a good dramatic moment to tie things back in from Oz-specific to Namesake-general.
I bet the mask talking to her now is Alice!
I see what you did there.
I want me freedom!

I love this comic by the way you do everything so well! ^_^
