Awesome I like how things are turning out. And I’m cool with whatever relationship they have. It’s always good to have friends even if they do things aren’t that great.
I get that Anlise loves Renge. A deep, even romantic kind of love. (Clearly, because how else could she so completely forgive Renge for what she did?) But what I haven’t seen much evidence of is if / how Renge loves Anlise back.
I could see Renge having some sort of feelings for Anlise. Perhaps as fond childhood friends or even a bit more. But actions speak for themselves. Remember this page?
To her credit, Renge couldn’t look at Anlise when she screams her name in pain and anguish at the betrayal.
On the next page, Renge actually looks sad and gives Anlise a hug… Then, without missing a beat, she tells her she looks pretty and reminds her to wear her hat! -_-
Granted, her expression appeared to betray at least a LITTLE remorse for having to do that. But she did it anyway. And, in the end, the brain poppies VERY nearly killed Anlise. If it wasn’t for Warrick healing what was left of her body and brain, she would have surely perished.
(BTW: We have not seen Anlise thank Warrick for saving her life or restoring most of her memories.)
How about this, page, where Anlise is missing an eye and looks oh so pretty with the vines growing out of her?
Or how about here, where Anlise rampages on the peaceful village, attacks Scarecrow, and very nearly kills Warrick? I suspect Anlise would later apologize for that, if she had remembered doing it. But if Renge loved Anlise as much as she loved her, wouldn’t she later apologize for turning her into a psychotic killing machine?
We never saw a page with Renge shedding tears for what she “had to do”, did we? To be fair, Renge seems have done what she did on Ozma’s orders and did so in order to protect all of Oz from certain destruction. But, from everything I’ve seen, I would say that Renge must have a deeper love or sense of loyalty to Ozma (at least as deep as Warricks feelings for Ozma) than anything she might feel for Anlise. At least, that’s what I see.
Why isn’t Warrick, the fixer of things, fixing/healing his uncle? Anlise is a Witch too and should have some magics for a fight. Perhaps she could transform that black critter into a cool trenchcoat?
Actually, it’s Selva who specializes in transformation / polymorph magic. If anyone could transform that thing into something vulnerable and/or powerless, it would be her.
Anlise is now calling Emma by her real name. I love how the characters turn out to be different than they seemed to be. Great character and plot surprises!
You did a great job of having Anlise tell Renge (and Warrick, though it’s not really much of HIS doing) to get out there and help Emma, not calling her ‘the Dorothy’.
Even after what Renge did to her, she still is nice and . . . loving. Shows how love isn’t Black-and-white.
And judging by how exciting this page of panels I’m guessing the slightly cartoonish look is intentional.
Wasn’t Warrick the who let the black gunk thing loose? Or am I remembering things wrong? I really what to know what the black goo is, my theory so far is that it’s an embodiment of something.
It’s kinda funny that they’re all just standing there as Emma runs away with the monster chasing her. It seems like only Anlise realizes that she might need some help. Glad to know that Anlise is back to normal, though.
I really hope we get to hear Renge’s side of things soon… ’cause brainwashing anyone, especially people whom you love and love you back is majorly MESSED UP and I want her to give us an explanation that’ll let us forgive her. Or me. Maybe it’s just me.
Wow, people are just now noticing the vibes between Anlise and Renge? I’ve had suspicions for ages that I was content to call confirmed when Anlise was so compelled to enter the throne room, insisting on seeing Renge even if it meant being restrained by shackles. Regardless, kawaii!!
Anlise is still by nature a relatively toned down version of the woman that was first taken over by the poppies. She’s always been on the more optimistic side of the “new” generation of Ozites. She was more innocent (as seen during the funeral scene in chapter 7) and has a sense of wonder that drew Renge to her. Theirs is a story that I would actually love to explore more some day.
Meg, can I second that I would love to read that story? It sounds like not only an interesting love story, but a great way to get at some of the cultural issues and changes Oz has been facing.
There’s a number of side stories we’d love to address. I actually have a prose short story of a younger Agha partially completed that I want to finish one day.
Meg, it would be great to get the side stories without interrupting the flow of the narrative. You have great skill in creating complex but memorable characters! Keep up the great work.
Hmm… your suggestion that these plans -specifically- are evil would imply that Isameg has plans of the non-evil variety… I’m going to take a General Ackbar moment here to shout “IT’S A TRAP!!”
Anyone who gets the chance should go back and reread the section where Renge has to replace the poppy on Anlise. Knowing more about the situation, and the stress Renge was under… it is absolutely heartbreaking.
Oh enough with the damn blame game. Everyone in trouble, it doesn’t matter in the long run who cause it. Just work together and fix it!
I’m sorry stuff like that just bugs me in stories. You don’t have to keep basing the offenders head over it if they’ve long since got it that they messed up.
So, aside from the touching moment betwen Anlise and Renge, I’m stuck on trying to figure out the significance (if any) of the -colored! – leaf that Anlise is holding and seems to be extending toward Renge in the second to last panel.
Well, despite how much Anlise loves Renge, Renge went too far by anyone’s standards and should be made to pay by her, of all people from where I stood. Why would she forgive someone who literally stole her choices as a human being away? That’s one of the most depraved things you can do to a person. They call it mind rape for a reason.
The creature reminds me of Lovecraft’s shoggoths and Clark Ashton Smith’s shape shifting beings that destroyed Commorium of ancient Hyperborea, that have kinship to the alien god Tsathaggua.
Great as usual, such wonderful conceptions and the characters all seem alive as they should be. Even the Scarecrow.
Hey I just thought of something. Exactly WHAT IS IT that everyone HATES Warrick for that involves Ozma? Unless Warrick took full blame for what happened to Ozma and Adora all those years ago to get Selva out of trouble, why’s everyone basically keep saying that its HIS fault that Ozma’s been gone all this time?
So anlise is pretty awesome when she’s in control of herself. Good to see.
Of course I meant to capitalize *Anlise.
Go anlise!!
and…. am I the only one that been getting vibes between anlise and renge? or I’m reading way too much into this?
You’re not reading too much into it. Anlise and Renge are what you think they are.
That makes this even more awesome to see you say that! Alex, I had the vibes too, but I’m really bad when it comes to knowing. lol
I was pretty sure that HAD to be the case, given what Anlise has gone through and STILL not wanting to kill Renge.
Eeeeeexcellent.
Awesome I like how things are turning out. And I’m cool with whatever relationship they have. It’s always good to have friends even if they do things aren’t that great.

Sorry it took me so long to approve the post. Just now saw it!
They’ve gone way waaaay beyond vibes.
You tell ‘em, Anlise!!!
Why isn’t Warrick, the fixer of things, fixing/healing his uncle? Anlise is a Witch too and should have some magics for a fight. Perhaps she could transform that black critter into a cool trenchcoat?
Now there’s a thought!
Actually, it’s Selva who specializes in transformation / polymorph magic. If anyone could transform that thing into something vulnerable and/or powerless, it would be her.
That’s a more advanced method of Mending that he’s never learned.
yet, anyway.

It’s really not. You can love someone with all your heart and still be really pissed off at their actions.
And it may be a large part of why you are irritated.
I think I may have mistyped that whole sentence of Renge and Anlise, though . . . never mind.
Wasn’t Warrick the who let the black gunk thing loose? Or am I remembering things wrong? I really what to know what the black goo is, my theory so far is that it’s an embodiment of something.
I was half expecting Renge’s face to go anime-style O.o when Warrick ran off! Good on Anlise! In many ways.
It’s kinda funny that they’re all just standing there as Emma runs away with the monster chasing her. It seems like only Anlise realizes that she might need some help. Glad to know that Anlise is back to normal, though.

I was pretty much convinced back when we got the cover of the two of them.
Warrick goes to save Emma (dramatic shipping moment) and misses dramatic shipping moment.
Oh, the irony!
Now I get what Warrick meant when he said that Anlise wasn’t acting herself. That is quite a change.

We definitely have plans regarding these. Evil plans. ^_^

tear fell from my cheek

Renge is mistress of the poppyvines of DOOM. She’d better get those poppyvines pointed in the right direction, stat.

I love the “Got it. Thanks, Anlise.” I don’t know why. But I’ve read this page three timese and every time it’s my favorite part.
