*Makes random guess* Emma is the namesake for 1001 Arabian Nights maybe? I can’t wait to see where this goes… As always, your art is so express. Thank you!
IF NOSE IS ARAB I WILL SHIT MYSELF WITH GLEE.
/An Arab woman
Guilty as charged.
AAAAAAAAAAAAA (If you ever need help with the Arabic side of that, I am TOTALLY OPEN)
Oh, good to know! Actually, just to verify, we had a bit of conflicted information regarding habibi/habibati, some source saying that habibi can be used to address both genders, but other sources stated that habibati was required to address a female loved one. We went with habibati in the end, it just still bugs me. Which form is best?
Habibati is only a little jarring here ’cause it’s the uh… ‘formal’ (for lack of a better word) Arabic, and people don’t really talk like that. There’s the everyday language, and the one used for the Bible and the Qu’ran and legal documents. Habibti would be better, ’cause it’s like saying “my dear” instead of “my most darling queen” or something else equally fancy.
So Habibti is like the everyday form to address a woman?
Then again, in kinda makes sense that Nose would use the super formal version for… secret plot reasons… *laughs*
So we can affect the plot by correcting you?
Maybe. Powerful, powerful forgotten comas… And secretive forgotten words.
Oooh, good to know. Thank you! I’ll correct that in the morning.
OH MY GOSH! Somehow, even before this page, I thought he was Arab. Or at least I thought if this was ever a movie, an Arab actor would play him best. SO COOL.
Also, *high five* for Gunnerkrigg reference below. =D
Really? … His hair doesn’t really have the right texture for it, does it?
So he’s a… pedophile? This guy just seems to get creepier with every page…
He’s a young teen in the blue image. He’s about 6 years older then her.
Okay, not quite as creepy. She just looks like she’s eight and he looks like he’s in his late teens.
No, no. The word “habibati” is used for a loved relation or close friend. I think his family was friends with her family when he was about twelvish (?) and she around fourish (?).
OMG… YEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!! I need more
Did Nose used to be a girl? I’d swear that’s a girl in panel five, and what’s in hir hand?
Guys can have long hair, too. And I’m assuming you mean the pole… where they hang bags of IV fluid so that the patient can walk around and drag it with them.
Ohhh! That’s what that is! Thank you!
Guys can have long hair too, but the face looks feminine to me too. Could be he was just a pretty boy with long hair.
Nose, you are too pretty, it’s confusing the readers.
There’s so many pretty-boys in this comic…
Hmm, maybe Warrick will have some competition.
oh no Nose is NO competition for Warrick
damn
i’m becoming a Warrick fangirl 0.0
Don’t feel bad. I totally have a crush on Selva, even if she’s not real.
*brofist* those choppers sure are tempting
I think we all know how that competition would go…
Warrick FTW! Go Team Green!
Chuckle. I could so see both of them doing that!
That sketch. <3
Yeah, I totally wasn’t expecting to see this in the comments XD I still think Warrick would win, as purty as Nose is X3
get him Warrick!!! this has got to be one of the cutest Warrick drawings
oh my goodness, I never thought about a face-off between Warrick and Nose, burr now that it’s in my mind, I want to see it in the comic.
PS, Warrick would still totally win.
I love you.
Well, as long as Nose doesn’t get a hold of a water pail.
Ever heard of puberty?
AH! I don’t know how to feel! Why are these always the Saturday updates?! He was a very pretty young teen. I’m guessing he met her after finding out he was a Namesake? I wonder what she was in the hospital for?
Random guess!
Nose was a doll in the doctor’s office that became a real boy!!
Wooops. O__o I just realised that the person in the right blue panel is Nose and not Emma. Never mind then. D:
Hmm. Namesakes meeting by complete accident(?) in the hospital… suspicious.
I’m just gonna sit here, grin, squee for ungodly amounts of time and make a few noises of which I’m sure will catch the attention of and embarrass my fiance.
But… Warrick for life, Nose. You gtfo and stay out, I got mah eyes on you. B[ *shakes fist*
Ohmygosh, I love Gunnerkrig Court!! Keep up the great work, Evil Isameg. I cannot stand this secret intamacy between Emma and Nose.. I mean, it’s really only from Nose to Emma for now, but I don’t want her to wake up and forget Warrick, completely. BUT NOSE IS SO ATTRACTIVE! (Also, I’m pretty sure he’s a guy.. We all have those awkward teenage years, lol.)
Overruled. The dude is fugly.
This.. this is just so YES
yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes *blinker stone*
Great reference use.
On Tumblr you refer us to “The Red Door” 6/28/11. I gather that Emma was going to see the same doctor who was treating Nose. Obviously the contact between Emma and Nose isn’t merely random chance.
So they’ve met before… this is becomin’ more and more interestin’!! *worship*
Emma knows Nose? (Woops, bad pun) And he lurves her… If she dumps Warrick I will hunt you down and weave your guts into a tasteful flower arrangement with tulips and lilies. Be warned! Or maybe it’s more fraternal or paternal love.
What did Emma have… I mean, if Nose was really ill and they went to the same doctor.
Now Nose is Arab? Hmm, 1001 nights looms… And Emma is looking more like a free card than ever. What IS she?!
Answering these questions would answer so many questions. *evil laughs*
I understand now why they call you the Evil Isameg.
‘Tis because they inflict hideous torture upon us, their faithful prisioners- I mean readers. Readers. Definitely.
YES. Here comes a love triangle.
just what every fantastic comic needs- ROMANTIC TENSION.
Pictured below – Romantic tension! THE TENSIONEST!
(This is why Megan writes the dialogues)
Ha! I’d so love to see that happen!!
I’m afraid, given the actual tone of the comic, Warrick would be doing some dark magic and wielding an axe. I don’t know what Nose’s weapon of choice would be; originally I thought “Nose” was Cyrano, so that would be a sword, but now you’ve gone Arabic on me and the only Name I know in that area is Sinbad, which doesn’t seem to fit Nose, but I could be wrong.
Warrick doesn’t do dark magic. He’s like a healer-white-mage type. He could always get his sister to fight for him and turn nose into a tea cozy.
I’m sure there’s legends around Saladin too; but my knowledge of arabic archetypes is weak also.
Until this page, I thought Nose was Pinocchio. Maybe Jewish or Sumerian myth?
They have to have the actual name though. I can’t see someone naming their kid Pinocchio. Meeting new people would be so awkward. Maybe if he shortened it to Chio? That sounds kind of cute.
About the Sinbad idea- a key part of his tale is that he meets his “namesake” Sinbad the Porter, and tells him the tales of his fantastical voyages. Also, I could easily see Nose having some elements of the dashing buccaneer to him. Don’t know where the “Nose” part could come into that, but perhaps the “nicknames” they adopt don’t necessarily relate to their stories?
Anyway, I like the Sinbad theory
Jules Verne’s original concept for Captain Nemo had him as an Arabic character. The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen got that part right. Even the name “Nemo” is from an Arabic legend. I sincerely doubt Nose was originally called Ali Baba but there were a lot of other characters from Scherazade’s “1001 Arabian Nights” taht he could be namesake of.
I can see this happening
YES.
Love SQUARE/Trapezium – if you add in Ben! Emma and Ben are friends but Ben may have feelings for Emma, who seems to be getting close to Warrick just because she’s actually getting to know him without judgements of prior events (like everybody else in Oz), while Nose has just had a reunion with Emma though she may not remember or realize this anytime soon.
And now . . . oh, my!! We always get to see what we never saw coming, and this we didn’t see coming!!
Second look at the “habibati” made me think of Sleeping Beauty.
AND, from reading the comments (of which there ARE so MANY, most on one age?) made me think . . . could Emma’s mum have been in on this? I mean, we didn’t see her full face in the “House of Dorothy” pages, little Emma and Young Nose briefly met in this flashback shown, so . . . could Mrs Crewe be part of this (evil?) plan???
It does seem suspicious that Nose’s caller already knew about Emma and her wonderful powers, and an evil Nameless doctor would explain that.
“Habibati” ??
And the first thing that popped into my head was “Happy Birthday.”
Happy birthday would be Kull sine wa antum bi khayr (aka “blessings to you for years to come” I believe). Habibati is a generic word for “beloved”.
Hmmmm, is Nose Aladdin?
He is not Aladdin.
The only other Arabic famous hero I can think of is Sinbad.
That was my second guess.
Remember, Namesakes don’t have to follow the racial makeup of the original tale. For example, Wendy.
Well, from the nickname “Nose” It makes me think of Pinnocchio… but what parent would name their kid that?
So far I don’t see any sign that a Namesake has to be from the same culture/ethnicity as the story they mesh with. Is that right? Because right now I don’t see that it’s necessary that Nose be from only an Arabic story, especially if he grew up in multicultural Canada/US.
Good point, still, it’s fun to speculate about Arab stories when we know so little about them. That way we can make up more…
Aladdin was from china, if you read the classical translations, and his nemesis was an african magician.
Depends on the translation. In the edition I have, the magician learned dark magic in Africa. The tranlation was not so modern PC. Africa was dark place with evil people.
You know, I should be asleep. You’re making me laugh. I blame you ALL.
P.S. Not looking forward to more plane rides tomorrow.
I’ve been reading this for awhile, can’t remember how I found you guys, but I freaking love the way Isa draws everything and Meg’s dialogue! <3
You guys kill me on Saturdays!!!!!!!!
*flails* OMG. Wasn’t expecting THAT at all!
“I WILL remember you”?
This is all rather mind-meltingly mysterious and adorable and sweet and Arabic, but is Nose still going to Do As He’s Told?
I’ll say it again, Nosey Boy, DON’T MAKE US HATE YOU. Please. D:
Come on Nose don’t be an asshole, I know you don’t want too with all this beloved business.
So is that… who… why…. Auwgh D:
Whaaaaaat. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.
-deep breath-
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT.
*joins in chorus*
Funniest comments ever!
Haha, agreed! I mean, I’ve seen a couple sketches in the comments before, but this… I feel like I just got handed ten, super-huge chocolate bars
Hey, I went back to http://namesakecomic.com/comic/where-did-you-want-to-be/ and I noticed that Nose looked rather disappointed that the first thing she said was “Warrick”. *squeeee* I am having conflicting ships right now…
Oh my god I am dying, Isameg, you are amazing. Also, saving that doodle, it’s more than precious. Aladdin… Bahahahhahahah. *wipes tears from eyes and goes back to working on some fan art*
Is he Desire? The prince?
Loving the comic as always and I cant wait to find out more!
But may I say that those two doodles of Warrick and Nose are incredibly hilarious! While I am rooting for the hissing green one I cant stop laughing at the slap fight!
I am falling for Nose. Now I don’t know who I want Emma to be with. Poo. Also, those doodles are hilarious!
Seems to me a Wanton Mistresse of the Night would take both.
Which is probably why the guys are trying to figure out who ends up with Emma on their own.
Foolish boys, she’ll enjoy the fight, then put a bow around each neck and give them alternate nights.
I’ve been reading this comic for a year now, and I love it. Never had time to comment before (single parent, college student, starting my own business, barely have time to blink) but, I have got to say the sketch of Warrick and Nose slap fighting with Emma off to the side made me laugh so hard that all three of my cats went streaking from the room.
Woah, that’s quite the busy lifestyle! Thanks for taking the time to read us
I love this comic you guys, the art, the story, the character development, you two are amazing story tellers!
Erm, slap fighting, with Emma off to the side. Bah, blasted sleep deprivation messing with my punctuation skills.
Ah, the plot thickens (like a good pea soup, as my friend likes to say). My guess here is that Emma left a memorable impression on nose simply by being her kind, thoughtful self and that’s why she’s less likely to remember him. That, and kids don’t remember everyone they meet. Of course this theory conveniently helps keep Nose from being a competitor for Emma’s affections… does that make me part of Team Warrick?
Actually, I’m really getting a big brother vibe from Nose, rather than a romantic one, despite being silly above. I am starting to like him a lot and am thinking he had reasons he felt were noble for giving up his name.
That’s what I was getting at, a non-romantic reason for him to still remember her. Totally agree with you about the name thing, I doubt Isa and Meg would make the reasons for giving up their identity a simple matter of power or money. Those could still be aspects of the reason but not the whole reason. Maybe he knew he could one day help Emma…
*snort* Oh gosh..I just had an idea for a small sketch. Something to do with Warrick and plumage…*shifty eyes*
Pfft, like mating birds? Sounds genius *cannot get image out of head*
YUP. Like mating birds XD
This comments section is hilarious! Also, great page.
Just gonna wheeze all night like a fan girl, don’t mind me.
Why does “Notify me of follow-up comments by email.” subscribe me to all comments on this page?
Maybe you checked “Notify me of new posts by email.” by accident?
Did the same for me.
was it hebrew?
This comic is often times so adorable. I don’t know who I want to ship her with. Nose could have just had long hair as a boy… but part of me would be pleased to have a transgendered character about.
Excuse you. You and your potentially non-platonic backstory can leave, sir.
-stews in shipper angst-
Warrick VS Nose … I’ve rather fallen in love with Warrick but maybe we can find an equally awesome heroine for Nose – Selva or Herc?
Also where are the “House of Dorothy” and this tumblr I see referred to? Is there more Namesake to be had than just this strip – if so point me to it – I am SOOO there.
Thanks
MAJK
I often publish bonus sketches and materials about Namesake on my tumblr – Feel free to visit
I also publish a lot of other art! http://secondlina.tumblr.com/
OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOD
Nose is Sinbad! OR, he’s from one of the 1001 Arabian Nights! OR *le gasp* them ALL! Am I right? Oh my god, I dearly hope so!
Keep up the good work!
Habibati Evil Isameg, are you shipping Emma and M. Nose or teasing the shippers? Or both. (No sense limiting You.)
Well being a nonnative arabic speaker, Habibi means my love (masculine) and -ee denotes possessive so Habibati is the feminine form of my love, but this is about the same in Urdu so Nose is either Pakistani or really anywhere from Pakistan to Morocco……yeah, although I don’t think its a romantic relationship, I think he’s been a kind of guardian of her from the beginning and so loves her like a female relative of some sort, of course I don’t know their ages but I think it’s more familial
http://www.monde-diplomatique.fr/2004/08/SAID/11471
And thus begins the great shipping war and fan outrage of 2013. Who shall survive? Who shall emerge victorious? That my fellow fans… we shall see!!!!
Am I allowed to bet?
Wait, wait, wait, this may sound like a stupid/irrelevant question, but is Isa fluent in French? I’m just curious because I saw her respond in French, and maybe I haven’t been paying much attention to previous comments where she might have answered that question?
I’m French-Canadian, so my first language is French. I learned English much later in life (although I think I do pretty good! *laughs*). So yep, i’m fluent! Megan is trying to learn it.
Oh haha, thanks for replying! I myself am French! I learned English when I was 6 years old, but to me it sounds like you learned English waay later than that, and that’s interesting because I don’t think it shows (you do great). And good luck to Megan learning it!
Thanks for replying and keep up the awesome work!
It’s been going slow for me at the moment, because I have been so busy with work and writing! But a good friend gave me some children’s books, and I am pleased that I can work my way slowly through them.
Well then, it can be something you do in your free-time! Good luck!
Wait…Nose isn’t a girl is he? He kind of looks like one in the fifth panel. Or is that just his hair style?
NOSE
