*Makes random guess* Emma is the namesake for 1001 Arabian Nights maybe? I can’t wait to see where this goes… As always, your art is so express. Thank you!

Oh, good to know! Actually, just to verify, we had a bit of conflicted information regarding habibi/habibati, some source saying that habibi can be used to address both genders, but other sources stated that habibati was required to address a female loved one. We went with habibati in the end, it just still bugs me. Which form is best?

Habibati is only a little jarring here ’cause it’s the uh… ‘formal’ (for lack of a better word) Arabic, and people don’t really talk like that. There’s the everyday language, and the one used for the Bible and the Qu’ran and legal documents. Habibti would be better, ’cause it’s like saying “my dear” instead of “my most darling queen” or something else equally fancy. :)

So Habibti is like the everyday form to address a woman?

Then again, in kinda makes sense that Nose would use the super formal version for… secret plot reasons… *laughs*

No, no. The word “habibati” is used for a loved relation or close friend. I think his family was friends with her family when he was about twelvish (?) and she around fourish (?).

What did Emma have… I mean, if Nose was really ill and they went to the same doctor.

I’m afraid, given the actual tone of the comic, Warrick would be doing some dark magic and wielding an axe. I don’t know what Nose’s weapon of choice would be; originally I thought “Nose” was Cyrano, so that would be a sword, but now you’ve gone Arabic on me and the only Name I know in that area is Sinbad, which doesn’t seem to fit Nose, but I could be wrong.

Warrick doesn’t do dark magic. He’s like a healer-white-mage type. He could always get his sister to fight for him and turn nose into a tea cozy.

They have to have the actual name though. I can’t see someone naming their kid Pinocchio. Meeting new people would be so awkward. Maybe if he shortened it to Chio? That sounds kind of cute.

About the Sinbad idea- a key part of his tale is that he meets his “namesake” Sinbad the Porter, and tells him the tales of his fantastical voyages. Also, I could easily see Nose having some elements of the dashing buccaneer to him. Don’t know where the “Nose” part could come into that, but perhaps the “nicknames” they adopt don’t necessarily relate to their stories?

Anyway, I like the Sinbad theory :)

Jules Verne’s original concept for Captain Nemo had him as an Arabic character. The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen got that part right. Even the name “Nemo” is from an Arabic legend. I sincerely doubt Nose was originally called Ali Baba but there were a lot of other characters from Scherazade’s “1001 Arabian Nights” taht he could be namesake of.

Love SQUARE/Trapezium – if you add in Ben! Emma and Ben are friends but Ben may have feelings for Emma, who seems to be getting close to Warrick just because she’s actually getting to know him without judgements of prior events (like everybody else in Oz), while Nose has just had a reunion with Emma though she may not remember or realize this anytime soon.

And now . . . oh, my!! We always get to see what we never saw coming, and this we didn’t see coming!!

Second look at the “habibati” made me think of Sleeping Beauty.

AND, from reading the comments (of which there ARE so MANY, most on one age?) made me think . . . could Emma’s mum have been in on this? I mean, we didn’t see her full face in the “House of Dorothy” pages, little Emma and Young Nose briefly met in this flashback shown, so . . . could Mrs Crewe be part of this (evil?) plan???

So far I don’t see any sign that a Namesake has to be from the same culture/ethnicity as the story they mesh with. Is that right? Because right now I don’t see that it’s necessary that Nose be from only an Arabic story, especially if he grew up in multicultural Canada/US.

This is all rather mind-meltingly mysterious and adorable and sweet and Arabic, but is Nose still going to Do As He’s Told?
I’ll say it again, Nosey Boy, DON’T MAKE US HATE YOU. Please. D:

I’ve been reading this comic for a year now, and I love it. Never had time to comment before (single parent, college student, starting my own business, barely have time to blink) but, I have got to say the sketch of Warrick and Nose slap fighting with Emma off to the side made me laugh so hard that all three of my cats went streaking from the room.

Ah, the plot thickens (like a good pea soup, as my friend likes to say). My guess here is that Emma left a memorable impression on nose simply by being her kind, thoughtful self and that’s why she’s less likely to remember him. That, and kids don’t remember everyone they meet. Of course this theory conveniently helps keep Nose from being a competitor for Emma’s affections… does that make me part of Team Warrick?

Actually, I’m really getting a big brother vibe from Nose, rather than a romantic one, despite being silly above. I am starting to like him a lot and am thinking he had reasons he felt were noble for giving up his name.

That’s what I was getting at, a non-romantic reason for him to still remember her. Totally agree with you about the name thing, I doubt Isa and Meg would make the reasons for giving up their identity a simple matter of power or money. Those could still be aspects of the reason but not the whole reason. Maybe he knew he could one day help Emma…

Warrick VS Nose … I’ve rather fallen in love with Warrick but maybe we can find an equally awesome heroine for Nose – Selva or Herc?

Also where are the “House of Dorothy” and this tumblr I see referred to? Is there more Namesake to be had than just this strip – if so point me to it – I am SOOO there.

    Thanks

Well being a nonnative arabic speaker, Habibi means my love (masculine) and -ee denotes possessive so Habibati is the feminine form of my love, but this is about the same in Urdu so Nose is either Pakistani or really anywhere from Pakistan to Morocco……yeah, although I don’t think its a romantic relationship, I think he’s been a kind of guardian of her from the beginning and so loves her like a female relative of some sort, of course I don’t know their ages but I think it’s more familial
