We only have Creepy Ghost’s word that pulling that sword out will do what she says it will, though. There is, as yet, no proof one way or the other that it’ll be a *good* thing to pull the sword out.
One may be boxed in and have no other choices other than dying. Thus, if the only options are taking the sword or being dead, one takes the sword. Whatever problems that act causes may be countered later to create a better solution for all concerned.
What’s interesting about the whole “sword in the tree” thing is that while it’s very much in fairy-tale/folklore tradition, it’s very much not in the Ozian tradition. There are very few traditional weapons of any sort in the Oz canon, even post-Baum, and few of those that do show up actually cause serious harm. (The Army of Oogaboo had access to a gun tree, but I don’t think they ever actually fired the guns they picked from it….)
But I’m rambling. My main thought is this: I suspect the sword can take out the threat posed by the poppies — but what I want to know is how the sword happens to be available just when Emma needs it.
For all we know at this moment the sword goes under ‘has always been there’. After all, Emma physically didn’t go anywhere while she visited ghost and tree land. It mostly seemed a trip of the mind.
If the sword is even there now, and the ghost isn’t visiting for who-knows-what other reason.
I think we can pretty much assume pulling out the sword is not a good idea, but it is possible that Emma may not have a choice in the current situation.

Teacher’s stern voice: Would you gentlemen like to come up here and tell the class just what you are talking about?
AHHHH!!!!! Don’t go in there! There’s a crazy murderer ghost behind you!!! *like loud people in a movie theater*
Do you need a sword? I have one handy, over there in that tree.

Aaaand things quickly go from bad to worse.

What is the scary mask lady behind Emma wrapped up in?
My theory is that if/when she pulls the sword, she’ll become like Lidell was and able to open the portals at will.

That’s like OOM — Out Of Mana — in World of Warcraft, isn’t it? You never want to hear crucial casters say that…
